could you please attach the content of /etc/acpi/sleep.sh?
I suspect this script pokes the battery sysfs I/F and causes the oops when
resuming from S3.

OK. Atleast this is not a regression bug since 2.6.24.
Having said that, if you see all 3 C-states in /proc/acpi/processor/*/power
with the kernel not having CPU_IDLE

The boot hang works since 2.6.24.
I thought this was the same issue because I had the same MP-BIOS bug and some
soft lockups.
I tried 2.6.25rc7 today and up to now it runs

The failure might not be in CPU_IDLE. If I boot with a kernel without cpu idle
and with processor.bm_history=0 like you suggested, I also encounter the
problem.
