Your remark about usb devices also remind me that if I use a kernel with
CPU-idle enabled, it worked well (without setting the max cstate) if I use an
usb mouse. Maybe this

Hmmm, it would be a very long and painful bisection. The problem is, sound is
working very bad with anything prior to 2.6.25-rc1, so that I have to install
alsa 1.0.16 on top

Yes. C3 being problematic was our suspicion as well.
There is some interaction between C3 state and X driver. If we frequently use
C3 during X startup it can hang the driver.

The visit table (from comment #15) is missing the SSDT in the table header.
This is clearly a BIOS bug.
It has a backlight brightness method and USB wakeup functions included.

I just recognized that it will continue booting whether I press a key or not.
It is just that it might wait for 5-10 seconds *sometimes* before continuing.
