I need to completely replace my old RH3 Linux TSM server (5.3) by moving
the contents to a newer, beefier, RHEL4 box. I also want to upgrade the
server to 5.5.
Of course, the replacement process needs to be completely transparent.
Basically a push-pull.
Can someone point me to

I agree wholeheartedly, after IBM's server was down for a while during
my recent TSM 5.3 - 5.5 upgrade which was deliberately scheduled for a
very quiet day during the dead Christmas-New Years week. Guess what -
IBM decided it was a good time for their upgrade too.
I remembered that I had
A hypothetical question occurred to me one dark night:
You normally create the Windows service called TSM Server 1 (or 2 or
whatever) through the TSM Management Console when you first set up a TSM
server. Does anyone know how you could create the service through an OS
command-line interface?
dsmcutil install /name:TSM Scheduler /commmethod:tcpip
/password:YourNodePassword /schedlog:sched.log /errorlog:error.log
/autostart:yes

All in all, I was wondering how the upgrade went. Our server is
currently at 5.3.4.2 and we will be upgrading to 5.5.

One dark night 2005 I thought documentation should be correct, IC45255.
See Admin ref, dsmserv format.

Just think of it as an opportunity for a DR test.
First, TSM does not SUPPORT restoring a TSM DB from a lower level TSM to a
higher level server. (does not support means they don't test it. I'm
sure some people have gotten it to work, but the recommended way is quick
anyway.)

What Charles recommends will work, but is not the best way to accomplish what
your trying to do.
How well does it work at your site, Charles?

We have a server that is using Oracle/Rman/TDPO/LanFree backups. The node
is set to allow 2 mount points. Yesterday at the start of a backup TSM
threw out
an error saying that channel 2 could not be allocated because the node
had exceeded it's mount points:

What we did to upgrade from one AIX 5.1 server to a new AIX 5.3 server
while upgrading TSM from 5.2 to 5.4 was to present a SAN copy of the DB
and logs to the new system. We did make the mistake of directly
upgrading from 5.2 to 5.4. You should make a stop at each major level;
IBM can guide you

Thanks for the additional suggestions/methods.
Unfortuantely the old machine does not have any SAN disk (another reason
to get rid of it) nor slots to accomidate another card, so everything is
going to be via tape. In fact, the old box is behind a protected firewall
so to get the
Most nodes are defined with the default settings of Maximum Mount Points

Under client Nodes, Advanced Settings the Maximum allowed can be

On the newer version of the client, one thread is used for communication

Just wanted to poll the list and find out if anyone has a setup similar to
