Anyone else have problems with Windows2016 and VSS ? We have had very
little issues on Windows2008/2012 but now it seems to reappear. Looks like
the source of the problem is Windows itself and not SP.

We are constantly seeing problems with Windows VSS and systemstate
backups. The recent black Tuesday updates has causes numerous Windows
servers to start having backup problem where they previously worked just
fine.
In most cases they require the VSS hotfixes/fixpacks, etc. The quickest

Hi,
We always make systemstate backups, as we need the systemstate backups to
do be able to do a full restore of a machine. System states have become
very large with Windows Server 2008 R2, though can probably be tweaked with
later versions of TSM clients (6.x.x), which we don't use.

Tim,
I have seen issues with system state backups with certain versions of the
BAClient. You might want to check the version you use, using a newer
version of the BA client solved our issue, and we did not have to resort to
extra backups.

If you have physical Windows machines that require a Bare Metal Restore at a
recovery site in case of DR, you are stuck needing systemstate backups.
If your failures are always due to the same handful of clients, what I do is to
turn off TSM systemstate backups and use
Probably also worth mentioning that unless you have a another non-TSM
solution you can't restore AD, a domain, or forest without the
systemstate of your DC's.

Grigori,
Thank you for your analysis.
TSM Support says, the entire systemstate does not follow the incremental, but
rather the System Writer component of the system state will use the progressive
incremental operations. All other writers will still perform full backups. See
the Client Manuals
Did I misunderstand that the Windows 6.2.1.0 client would do incremental
systemstate backups rather than fulls every night? I thought a knowledgeable
person alluded to that a few weeks ago. And, APAR IC66810 is in the fixes for
6.2.1.0. It reads, 6.1.2 AND 6.1.3 TSM WINDOWS CLIENTS

Tim,
You might want to take a look at MS KB940184 - it deals with the VSS
errors.
Deleting the registry key mentioned in this KB article and restrting the
client did the trick for us.
