In my opinion the answer to this question varies relative to the size of the
forest/domain.

I like using the built-in tools to perform system state backups to a remote
location and then using the TSM client to backup those files to the TSM server.
For me, it meets two goals:
No third-party software on the domain controller
Guaranteed support from Microsoft (not "best effort") since I
I believe that TSM for VMWare is Active Directory aware and creates consistent
snaps of virtualized DCs.
I've handed our AD guys VM backups of their DCs for a couple years now and they
seem to be able to recover without much issue but I'm not an expert in AD or
what their procedure is.
