Try to work with aplay -v and you should get immediate feedback without having to check files etc. If I recall aplay -v -D hw:2,0 with a 96/24 file should tell you that 24 bits is not supported and suggest some others that are. Yes, aplay tells me: Available formats: - S16_LE - S32_LE But
