Apa yang dilakukan oleh Apek Ah Pee, selari dengan
yang dilakukan oleh Apek Tun Mahathir ... against the
traffic at 80 years young.
Buat salah tanpa hukuman.

Man, 80, drives against traffic flow for 30km
27 Jun 2006
by M. Husairy Othman

TAIPING: An 80-year-old man in his vintage Morris
Minor, was travelling along the North-South Expressway
(NSE) at 60kph yesterday afternoon. Nothing unusual
about that.

Except that he was driving against the flow of traffic
for almost 30km, and when stopped by highway
officials, he had two questions: "Why are there so
many cars on the road these days and why were all of
them flashing their headlights at me?"

This was the drama that unfolded at the highway rest
area near Taiping about noon yesterday when he could
not turn into the slip road leading to his house in
Bagan Samak, Kedah, as it was closed for repairs.

The man, known in his village as Ah Pee, had driven to
Parit Buntar in Perak, using the trunk road, to pay
his assessment fee.

He was on his way back when he realised that the road
leading to his village was closed due to repairs.

He travelled for 500m and found a second left turn,
thinking it would take him home. That turn, however,
led to the Bandar Baru toll plaza. He did not realise
he was on the NSE and drove for 37km when he reached
the Taiping rest area.

It was then he realised he was on the wrong track and
made a U-turn.

He drove for 29.9km against the flow of traffic in the
fast lane, oblivious to the honking and flashing of
headlights from oncoming vehicles.

A traffic police personnel who was manning a radar gun
on a hill along the NSE spotted him driving at Km200.

"He was driving between 60 and 70kph and I could see
the befuddled look in his eyes as the oncoming
vehicles flashed their headlights at him," he said
yesterday.

Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (PLUS) officials swung
into action upon being informed by motorists. Two PLUS
teams were dispatched to intercept Ah Pee.

The first team, stationed at Km196 of the NSE, failed
to stop him as he drove past them just as they were
parking their 4WD vehicle at a designated spot.

The second team, stationed further north at Km186,
attracted Ah Pee’s attention when they switched on
their headlights and siren and gestured at him to
stop.

"I ran to his car when he pulled over about 50m away
and ordered him to move over to the passenger seat
before parking the car in the emergency lane," the
official said.

"It was unbelievable.

"I asked him why he drove in such a manner and he
replied that it was his right of way since he was
driving on the left lane."

The official said that Ah Pee believed that he had not
endangered himself or other motorists.

"He expressed surprise at the number of cars on the
road these days.

"He even complained that most of them were flashing
their headlights at him for no reason," he said.

"We decided that it was a genuine mistake on his part
as he had never used the NSE before and escorted him
back to his house in Bagan Samak."

One of the officials drove Ah Pee’s car with the other
in tow and he arrived home before 3pm.

"I told him to ask for a lift from his children the
next time he went for a drive," the official added.

Reader's Comments

Ray, PJ:
It sounded hilarious but it dawned on me of the danger
posed by this elderly gentleman. The prompt response
by the highway authorities helped to aviod any major
accident especially since he was on the FAST lane. God
was watching him!

Lina, Kuala Lumpur:
It's unbelievably humorous and gravely dangerous, just
like in the movies. The only thing is, this is real. I
must praise those highway users who have been very
alert to avoid crashing on with him.

Devan:
Unbelieveably funny.. :))

Hj Nik Mustapha Ibrahim:
Traffic offence turns to be joke of the town.

Matthew Chan:
He should be reported and have his licence revoked. No
offence to the older generation, but your time is up
where driving is concerned. How can the authorities
let him off just like that? People who drives fast are
penalised but this scenario proves that slow driving
can kill as well.

FT, Kuantan:
Poor grandpa Ah Pee. Thank God the other drivers were
alert. Surely his guardian angel had to work overtime
to keep him safe. To the highway authorities, thanks
for the quick action.

Hoppy, Ipoh:
Hahahahhahahahahahahahahhahaha... I love this Ah Pee.
Really made my day yesterday and today listening to
you relate the tale, Max! Too bad we got scooped but a
hilarious read no doubt. Thank God he did not get into
any head-on collision with others. But how true about
old foggies on the road. No offence, but they're a
danger to themselves and other motorists.

Iliashah:
It'll not be funny anymore if somebody got killed. I
agree with Matthew, the old chap should be banned from
driving! The authorities are not doing enough, to
think that he drove nearly 30km before being stopped?

Vimala, Kuala Lumpur:
This is the most unbelievable thing I've ever read.
Thank God the poor old man is still fine and healthy.
He should never be allowed to drive ALONE again...

Eugene, KL:
This reminds me of an email joke...
An old lady called her husband's cellphone to warn him
that she heard on the radio about a wreckless fool
who's driving in the opposite direction on the highway
and causing a massive jam...
And the old man replied, "Yes, I know. And they are
ALL from the opposite direction!"

Mohd Zaki, Kota Bharu:
Please don't try this at home.

Paul, Shah Alam:
I can't see anything funny in this story. Ah Pee could
have caused a fatal accident and needs to have his
license taken away NOW, before he does kill someone.

Vinod Nair, KL:
Jeeeezzzzz! The wrong way on the fast lane... He's
lucky. Firstly I think its incredible that he can
drive at that age in a Morris Minor, and thank
goodness that the oncomming traffic was able to get
out of the way and then inform the relevant
authorities. I would have had a HEART ATTACK if I was
the oncomming driver.
GRANDPA AH PEE, PLEASE DON'T DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY
AGAIN.

Micro:
Several years ago I had a similar experience at the
Bangi toll plaza. A drunkard was driving his old
Mitsubishi 1600 on the wrong lane at night. It was a
near miss, and I honked at him, but he continued to
drive on.

Alex, KL:
This is not funny! The relevant authorities must take
serious actions.

C.C, Subang Jaya:
I don't think we should indulge in the humour of this
story but we should extract the lesson out of it. Not
just us - the readers, but also the authorities. There
is a minimum age to drive, thus there should be a
maximum age limit to drive too.

Ewan, Tamparuli:
This is something which could only happen in movies -
starring Rowan Atkinson !
