I suspect at some point they changed the gearing so a pot with 270 degrees of
rotation would work. They have recognized the wire as a point of failure.
I am curious if you tried repairing the old pot as I suggested as I have never
seen that not work.

Thinking way outside the box, what about some sort of phased array using
dipoles, which has the boresight synthesized to point at earth. In other
words, don't use fuel to reorient the bird, electronically steer the
phase of the antennas so that earth is in focus.
