It turns out I was doing everything correctly, but it just takes ages
for the Android virtual machine to start up...
Also, sometimes the virtual machine doesn't start up properly and I
have to re-run the application.

About your first error, you must have selected Run As-Server
Application.
Android project couldn't be started as any server application.
U've said that no Android application option in your run as
list,
i wonder if you build the project as Android Project?
u should try to build a new android
