One thing I dont understand is why the OS sometimes feels slow. There is a
lot of processing power in my phone, a Galaxy S3. For example when I press
the home screen button I expect the phone to instantly display the home
screen, but I always have to wait one or two seconds for it. I assume that
for the Android OS this is the equivalent of minimizing an application in
Windows. The desktop process is already running in the background and the
process of whatever app I was using is not terminated; it continues to run.
So there are no apps to start or stop, no cleaning up to do, no returning
of resources or garbage collection. So what is actually happening in the OS
during this time that I have to wait for?

One strange thing is that the phone returns slightly quicker to the start
screen when I use the back button. I assume that in some scenarios this
action will terminate the current process, so it should be slower, not
quicker.
