[android-developers] Getting points of interest from a certain location using Google Places API for Android

2016-03-18 Thread Gonzalo Diaz

I'm coding an Android application and I'm trying to get and display a list
of certain points of interest using Google Places API for Android. However
I've been checking the docs from here:
https://developers.google.com/places/android-api/signup and I haven't found
anything similar for Android.

On the other hand, the Google API for web services:
https://developers.google.com/places/web-service/intro does have that
functionality I'm looking for but Google says strictly not to use this API
in an Android app.

I wanted to know if is possible to use this web services API in an Android
app, and what other alternatives are there for such functionality I want to
implement.

Notice where it says "NoActionBar" - you're previewing with a theme that
has no action bar, where the title would normally be displayed. Try
changing that.

It seems illogical to base your decision for today on what "might" happen
tomorrow, particularly in matters of legality.

Something similar happened to me a week ago. It's a trap for the
unwary, and they need a warning for it, and in fact I wrote to support
suggesting that, and they said they would look into it.

But it's no mystery what happened to you. There's a rule in Google
Play that once you have published an app with targetSdkVersion set to 23 or
above, you cannot go back to a version prior to 22. Even if you have only
published to Beta. Even if you only have one person testing your app in
Beta, and that person is yourself.

The reason for this is the very different approach to permissions in
API level 23 (Marshmallow). Instead of having all permissions approved by
the user at install time, approvals for permissions are requested by the
 app itself at run time.

So, I guess that they are concerned that someone might have downloaded
your app and been asked for permissions, and denied those permissions, but
then they could update the app and get an APK using the old permissions
model, with all permissions assumed to have been already approved at
install time, when in fact the user had denied some or all of the
 permissions.

Anyway, you have only one possible course of action if you ever want to
update your app again: you need to publish your next update with
targetSdkVersion set to 23 or higher. And, with a higher version number,
 of course.

As you've already pointed out, you cannot remove either of your two
Beta versions, because deleting the most recent one would send you back to
 a pre-Marshmallow version.

Note that if you want code requiring permissions to work, you will have
to write whatever new code is needed to ask the user for permissions at run
time, rather than at install time. It's not all that hard to do, although
it's not entirely trivial. It's a bit tricky dealing with all the obscure
use cases in which the user messes with the permissions from app settings
and then returns to your app. I just did this myself and it involves lots
of annoying little situations, but it's ultimately doable. Enjoy.

[android-developers] What recourse should I take to unfair Google Play account termination?

2016-03-18 Thread Michael Cann
Hi,

I have had my Google Play account unfairly banned for life. The reasons
given for termination:

*REASON FOR TERMINATION*: Prior violations of the Developer Program Policies
> and Developer
> Distribution Agreement
> by this
> or associated accounts as outlined in previous emails sent to the
> registered email address(es) of the Publisher account(s).

No other information given. The only other warning I had was over 2 years
ago:

We wanted to let you know that your app(s) listed below statically link
> against a version of OpenSSL that has multiple security vulnerabilities for
> users. Please migrate your app(s) to an updated version of OpenSSL by
> 7/7/15. Starting on this date, Google Play will *block publishing of any
> new apps and updates that use unsupported versions of OpenSSL*.

I was using the Adobe Air SDK for an old project I didnt care much about, I
was also travelling the world at the time so forgot about it.

I have appealed the account termination but received this:

After reviewing your appeal, we’ve confirmed our initial decision and will
> not be reinstating your developer account.
> Your Google Play Developer account has been *terminated due to
> multiple violations of the Developer Program Policies by an
> associated Google Play developer account.* We’ve reviewed and confirmed
> this association.

I received no other information about my reason for a ban.

I replied asking for more information I received this from "Bruce":

As much as I would like to help, I’m not able to provide any more
> information. In our previous email, I made sure to include all the
> information available to me. Unfortunately, we've confirmed our initial
> decision and will not be reinstating your developer account.

So I still have no idea why I am banned. I have games on my account that I
worked really hard on over many many years and to have those totally
without warning or notice is totally unfair and against everything I
thought Google was about

Don't Be Evil

As a freelance apps and games developer my entire livelihood has
been severely damaged by this. I may NEVER again upload my existing apps
and games. I may NEVER again create any app for the Google Play store.

I have contacted two friends who work in Google they have both been given
the party line: use the appeals

page. Well I have done that and it has gotten me no where.

I have no where else left to go.

Can anyone here help?
