Also you can host the APK file privately, behind a log in of you own.
Then simply allow only those to add the app that have credentials.
You will have to change the settings on the phone to install a non Market
app, easy to do though.
Or the app can have it's own log in system self contained

I was wondering if anyone knew of a method that would prevent individuals
from downloading an app unless they had a password, belonged to a certain
group, etc.? To my knowledge nothing like this exists, so I figured I would
reach out and see if anyone here knows of a way to do this.

If so, I do this through DropBox... They host the files, and you can create
a public download link for your test group.
Only those that know the actual link can download it...
