AoE is a network protocol, and vblade is just one program that uses that protocol. I don't think the AoE targets the original poster was testing were designed for high performance. The vblade was designed to be as simple as possible an implementation, in user space, of an AoE target. It's very hard to compare network protocols for storage because it's rare that there's a real apples-to-apples comparison. The AoE target hardware systems sold by CORAID are very fast, and I don't think that anything with a similar price could compete, but if you compare dissimilar things, it's difficult to interpret the results in a meaningful way.
