Exactly my sentiments, C'da. When I saw the news item, and later this
forwarded here, I felt that at the very least there was a huge
misunderstanding of $ cents, and how acquiring easy home loans is in this
country. The amounts are small as you put it.
What was surprising (according to the news)
Cannot speak for the other addresses in the article but Albany Street,

a cut and paste job from some associated (with his son-in-law or daughter?)

Oooops! You are right. Just realized that my calculator does not go beyond 8
numerals, thus the inability to
do simple arithmetic :-).
But from the corrected numbers, it is unlikely that the listed houses would add
to $ 5,000,000. If we
take the MOountainview, CA condo at $1,000,000, the one
mention of the address as a place of residence for graduate studies.
*** Very likely!
Also, the various incomes shown for the daughter and son-in-law could be
explained by
income at the time for applying fo a loan. Over a number of years they would
change.

143 Albany Street, Cambridge, MA, the address listed in the article is
actually the Edgerton House at MIT, a student residence.

What was surprising (according to the news) is that some NRI's gave Akhil
Gogoi the low-down on this.
*** We all know that not all NRIs are equal :-). We also know of our folks'
pervasive colonial-serfdom-inspired awe of NRIs is quite unfounded.

My gut feel is that nobody is so careless, particularly those on the take.
Not quite In fact, it could well be the other way. In India, corruption
has reached heady heights, and siphoning off 'thousands of crores of Rs',
