Hazarika (ভূপেন হাজৰিকা) (1926–2011) was an Assamese lyricist, musician,
singer, poet and film-maker. His songs are marked by humanity and universal
brotherhood. However for the Assamese people, he represented something much
more. For almost half a century or more, through his music he had popularised
the Assamese and in fact the North East Indian music to India and beyond; and
in the process he carried with him the Assamese cultural identity and the
psyche that he represented. On the other hand, it may be rightly said that it
was Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, who after Sri Xongkordev, is the only individul who
had united through his humanity and mass appeal, the various ethnic elements of
Assam into a common integrated Assamese community. We in Friends of Assam and
Seven Sisters have been thinking of various ways to preserving the memory of
the legendary Assamese hero. It is simply befitting that his portrait should be
displayed in the Nehru Center in London, along with other world dignitaries. To
make the function a success, discussion's are still going on with many others
including Tej Hazarika, (a FASS Director) of New York to select the right
photo as well as to have the right wording to go with it. We will keep you
posted.Best WishesRegardsRajen BaruaFASS INTERNATIONAL (USA)Houston.
