I always empty /usr/lib/asterisk/modules if I am going to do an
install with a different version, or better to do it always.

You should probably do a
make distclean
And then run configure again before re-compiling.

I can't get res_fax to load. I built it accidentally with app_fax
enabled, and was getting this in the log on startup:
