Today, 12 February 2008, marks the 60th anniversary of active membership of
the Gliding Club of Victoria by Jim Barton.

Many of us haven't been on the planet that long let alone a member of the
same gliding club. For those of you who can't work out the numbers; that
means Jim joined the club in 1948! That's before the Korean War! Before
the USSR exploded its first atom bomb. Before the Berlin Wall! John F
Kennedy wasn't even thinking about politics! That was in the first half of
last century! Although I'm not sure, I think it would be best for me to say
that he was 2 years old when he joined!

A few of the highlights in the past sixty years include; serving as
President of the club for 35 years, devoting an enormous amount of time in
getting a Gliding World Championship at Benalla in 1987, running "Old Mates"
week in March for years and being awarded an OAM in 1990 for his
contributions to Gliding.

Jim is still active as an Instructor, Tug pilot and Glider pilot at the
club.

Congratulations Jim!
