I have problems finding out if content is expired.
Comparing the two xml's below I have not been able to identify any
parameter that tells that the later is expired and no longer available ?

Episode xml doesn't really give much in the way of availability windows
If you look in the episode xml you'll see a versions element like:
versions
version canonical=1
pidb01rryyq/pid
duration2700/duration
types
typeOriginal version/type
/types
/version
