From another point of view. Why not put on iPlayer HD versions of programmes that haven't been broadcast in HD. Maybe even 1080p? Or even have an iPlayer channel for programmes that haven't been broadcast at all? There does seem to be the issue that iPlayer can only be used to catch up with

Not really- we use the iplayer backend to provide the embeddable media player to stick in Movable type. The UI for the ingest makes clear that this content is going into iPlayer, and various metadata elements are assigned so that it is associated as a 'non-scheduled' element. It's a bit strange

The Sky at Night is still SD but it's broadcast as upscaled HD on BBC1 HD. The quality is slightly better but it would be nice in proper HD. I'm not too worried about Patrick's wrinkles (see Countryfile/Jay Hunt affair). I just don't see the logic of having two versions of the same programme
