Announcement: Rick & Deirdre's outdoor BBQ party for the confirmed-vaccinated
will be held again 4pm-midnight, Saturday, August 14, in West Menlo, 1105
Altschul Ave. @ Gordon Ave., tel. 650-283-7902. CDC cards _will_ be checked on
arrival. More details will be posted to the BASFA list, Real Soon Now. Rick
will not deny rumours of being a good cook.
Howierd:
Going to the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. Shatner hasn’t announced that
he wont be there, others have bailed.
A week from today his iStream Planet job begins (event operator). Part Time
remote work, depending on sportscasts.
Celebrating his cat by not having a virtual background on. Jade the cat is
somewhere in the background, may leap about...
Gearld:
Anniversary of Apollo 15 returning from the moon 50 years ago yesterday. First
of the more science oriented missions.
Lisa:
7 Star Bar & Grill (Bascom near San Carlos in San Jose) is open again. Some
food items are missing. They are checking for vaccinations. Food was excellent.
Yochanan:
Lost his phone off the top of his car, probably fell off on Winchester. Loss of
sim card is the most heartbreaking.

Kahn Plumbing (Fremont area, with a radius) fixed backup in tub. Picked up when
called on Sunday. Came the next morning for drain issue and root cleaning. Did
the work from 9 to 9:40.
The Suicide Squad (HBO Max) Glad didn't see on the big screen, as it is
ultra-violent and bloody – and surreal as well! Harley Quinn is a self-saving
"hero." Dead Shot deserves to be kicked in the nuts repeatedly. Better cast
than the previous one. Impressive named cameos. Well-lit scenes, unlike other
DCU films (the humor was dark thing).
Yochanan: saw in theatre. Enjoyed it a lot more than the first. R rated. Harley
stole the show. Bloodsprt really great, and Ratcatcher (2) really emotional.
Alan: Favorite jokes were from Polka Dot Man.
Valerie: Enjoyed. Very-very-violent. Better villain in this one than the first
one. Harley is now fully dressed, with a female POV. King Shark has great
one-liners. Quite a lot of great moments.
Ken: Appears that Warner's are doing a DCU Reboot (away from the Snyder-verse).
7-Stars: Star Wars Themed local dive-bar, without the yuck factor. Don't run
sports on the TVs. A small (compared to real size) Jabba the Hut is on display.
Lots of SF/Comic films running. Full menu not running (about 50%) Only cash &
Venmo at this point. There in the late afternoon, about 10-12 people total
(including own party). Busy on con weekends, and May 4.
RickM:
Impulse (streaming series). Along with the dair film Jumper, is based on a
series of books. Was on YouTubePremium. Quite good. May be available again on
YouTubePremium in future (ad supported?) Recommend. Currently watching second
series.
Robin read the books. Much was good, a little gruesome. Might not want to see
that on screen. (Rick: once early scene that might be).
Lisa:
The Green Knight (3Below, limited run) Once read the Tolkien translation, which
seemed disjointed. The movie is also a strange amalgamation of stuff (like the
source). Interesting story, beautifully shot. It's a quest. Lots of false
endings, with an ambiguous finale (the book had four endings). Would see on
again TV.
Yochanan: reviewed it last week. Liked it. Great performances.
Alan:
Ultra7, released one year after the original Ultraman series. Better than
original. Doesn't feel cheap or dated. Writing improved. Ultraman was fun Kaiju
battles. Ultra7 has twists and reveals. Prefers the classic Ultraman series' to
the recent ones. Thinks of it as the Japanese Doctor Who (started in the '60s,
still going, alien protecting Earth, mechanical voiced baddies...)
Yochanan: Agrees that the originals are better.
Valerie:
A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians and A Radical Act of Free Magic by HG
Parry. Set in an America that was founded for the free use of magic independent
of class. Enjoyed.
A Thousand Nights and Spindle by EK Johnston. The first is Shaherazad retold.
Sequel, set generations later, sets Sleeping Beauty in the middle-east. Enjoyed.
Howierd:
2020 Olympics Closing Ceremonies, on time in 2021! In three years will be Paris
2024... Just when you thought the were done, they weren't (repeat....) Some
nice touches though. Highlights were the special effects, including the
creation of the virtual Olympic Rings in the stadium. Fireworks not as intense
as the opening. Tokotaka Okamoto sang the olympic anthem – appeared to be "it
ain't over till the fat lady sings" except it's a male soprano (and it wasn't
done!) Then they switched to Paris. Way too long, but impressive. There were
pieces of genius.
Gayle: Opera singer is a "Sporanista." Enjoyed him as well. Not surprised at
the length.
Lisa: Featured a Japanese folk dance that everyone knows. The handwaving was a
pattern, which lead to the athletes picking it up. All about greeting, caring
and sharing. They tried to be inclusive.
Rick: Do not go to Tokyo in Jul/Aug. It's very hot... (Gayle second it!)
Yochanan:
Rendezvous with Rama (Artthur C Clarke) Loved it. Great world building. Not
dated. Felt real. Great mystery.
Hanna (Amazon Prime) Loosely based on movie from a few years ago. Liked the
movie, and diidn't like the first episode – but was hooed with episode two and
has watched most the rest of the two series. A coming of age spy espionage.
Don't recognize the actors. The speak foreign languages in the countries that
they're in. It feels reel. (Rick likes it too).
Rumor of the Week:
It's really insincere for a Suicide Squad to have sequels.
