Dear Tom Yogi:
I'm catching up on Berner-l's I've missed, so I apologize if this thread has
already been addressed.
Oh, our berners do so love to be out-of-doors with their people.
First, two disclaimers. (1) Most of my experience has been in Washington
State so I'm not familiar with the

Hi Stephanie,
The main problems that occur with stifles (knees) are slipping patellas
which is not a common problem in Berners or ACL damage which is most often
caused by accidents though a very straight angled joint might be more

Hi Dee,
In order for a successful breeding to be accomplished we like to see at
least five months between seasons. Bitches that short cycle very often have
conception problems and are more prone to adverse hormonal problems that
might result in pyometra. Pyometra is life threatening emergency and

The Gentle Leader is a great tool, should be slowly introduced to the dog a
few seconds at a time. It can mess up the fur a little sometimes...the
nose loop should be loose enough to slide down to the back part of the nose
but the neck loop should be very snug and high up behind the ears.
Had not heard this is a problem in berners. What is
the treatment? Surgical? IF so, what are the long
term prognosis and when is this surgery performed for
best results?

I think the lap-sitting thing is one of the endearing traits of a Berner.
The image of a huge fluffy dog curled up (and over) his person, testing the
weight of the chair is comical and sweet at the same time -- just why we all
love these guys so much. I am actually considering a much larger chair

I've always been bemused by the fact that, with a total (human) population
of fewer than 10,000, we have at least six berners on Salt Spring Island.
Probably more -- that's only the ones I know personally! And there were a
couple of others who used to live here, but whose owners moved off Island.
