Aspirin dose - One too many?
I guess I am so used to taking two aspirins for myself that I just impulsively gave Nicco two and meant to give only one. Are we okay??? I gave him two buffered aspirins (325 mg each). Nicco is 14 months and 100 lbs. Yikes! Cindy Reid
A Good Vet
Just came back from a going away party for a veterinarian of ours who is returning to her homeland of Canada. Paula has been one of the vets in our clinic who has taken care of our pets for the last ten years. Very dedicated and passionate professional, her leaving is a great loss. Tonight was an eye opener with anecdotes from other vets and technicians and pet owners on all vets and vet techs do for our furry friends..the long hours, the learnings, the tough cases, the individual cases they will never forget. I sobbed and I laughed. A good vet is priceless. We lost our Travis to cancer a year and a half ago and it was a very complicated case...started out looking like osteosarcoma and ended up looking like it was MH after all was said and done. Paula grabbed me in a big hug and said that M. Histiocytosis fooled her once but it won't fool her again...she now knows what she is up against with that kind of cancer. We have another vet at this clinic who has become a very good friend...made many trips to our home when Travis was very ill. The whole staff at our clinic is terrific...they're all women ;) Cindy Reid Corning, NY
The Berner Effect
This happened to us and our Nicco today (almost 11 months old now!). We went to watch a funny boat race on the lakefront in Watkins Glen, the kind where the boats entered are homemade and usually held together with duct tape. Thousands of people crowded along the waterfront. We finally squeezed into a spot for ourselves and after watching all the commotion on the water for a few minutes I took a look around me and there was a teenage girl next to us with a stricken look on her face. She was crying and had her arms wrapped around herself and could not take her eyes off Nicco. I felt awful and asked her if she was afraid of big dogs but she shook her head and in a small voice she told me that she used to have a Berner. I got the feeling that seeing a Berner today was totally unexpected for her and that her emotions on seeing one also took her by surprise. It had been FIVE years since she lost her Berner, her family had brought the puppy home when the girl was very young and the dog lived to 10 years old. Other people stopped often to ask about Nicco during the race. The girl stayed close by and every so often she would pet Nicco, still with tears on her face. Some people also noticed the girl. One woman asked her, You're crying over that dog?. I hugged the girl and told her I knew how she felt and that 10 years was a wonderful old age for her Berner to have lived to. She was a lovely teenager and I hope she has a Berner someday in her future. I am sure she would cherish it. Hoo boy...driving home I keenly felt again the loss of my Travis who died at six years old last year. I also felt joy today being on the lakefront on a gorgeous day with my pup Nicco who loved seeing all the other dogs and people and especially the many young kids who came over to pet him. Oh, and I need to find that post about the Berner cards for handouts and how to order them...so many questions today. Cindy Reid Corning, NY

Re: training,others taking dog
So, it isn't necessarily absolute taboo to allow someone else to work with your dog. Just want to point out that I do agree with this. My original statement was about letting a stranger handle your dog. The first obedience trainer we ever used was wonderful and she could use my dogs anytime to demo. Cindy Reid and Nicco
Bad Experience in Class - Update
Thanks everyone for all of your advice...lots of good advice and training experiences have been shared. In hindsight, I wish I had been quicker to react and challenged the instructor's actions when they happened but I didn't. I did return to the facility this evening and explained to the instructor why Nicco and I would not be returning. I let her know, nicely, that I am going to continue to work with Nicco but that it would not be in that class or that facility. I did explain what made me uncomfortable in the class and what I did not agree with. I do know better. Last year when Nicco was 5 months old we attended a class with a really positive, upbeat instructor...had also trained with her years ago with our first berner, Travis. Hers has always been a fun class that I and my dogs look forward to going to. Thought I would try this other facility a little closer to home...lesson learned. Know I know firsthand the different types of training methods out there, the good and the bad! Best advice from the list...don't let someone you do not know handle your dog! Nicco is a confident, outgoing pup and that instuctor made him flee from her by bopping him in the nose with her fist. I know all I have to do to get him to take a treat gently is to withhold the food, ask for gentle, and he gives me gentle. Thanks again for all of the experiences shared...this kind of thing happens alot. Cindy Reid and Nicco Corning, NY
Finger Lakes Bernerfest
Could someone in the know post the date for the Finger Lakes Bernerfest on Cayuga Lake? I have heard it may be as soon as this Sunday or possibly the following Sunday on June 8. Thanks. Cindy Reid Corning, NY
Bad Experience in Class
I just went through a not so nice experience in an obedience class...The instructor was trying to get ten month old Nicco to quit being such a shark for his food rewards by teaching him easy. She would keep the bait in a closed fist and rap him on the nose when he was not being gentle enough...this was not a gentle tap and once was a pretty good punch. Nicco's reaction was to try to flee from her...I was not happy about his reaction. It was the first time I have ever seen him try to flee from someone. I also did not like the way the instuctor yanked the dogs around when they headed off in the opposite direction when walking on leash. I have been through other obed. classes and I know a good pop is effective...I didn't like the rough yanking I saw in this class. Am I just showing my inexperience or does any of this sound kinda rough? I am going one more week but if I come away with mixed feelings again then I'll quit this instructor and go elsewhere. Thanks, Cindy Reid
Nicco Pics - 6 weeks to 8 months
Dear List, I have finally gotten around to uploading some recent pictures of Nicco to his webshots photo page. Can't believe that cute lil' pup is almost 9 months old now!! His webpage has photos from six weeks to 8 months - How fast they grow! Just click the link below. http://community.webshots.com/album/50511539TPRWOv Nicco is a funny, happy pup and loves everybody. His is just getting over a bout of pano and we are back to taking our long walks down to the river in back of our home. Well, husband Dan and Nicco are walking down to the river...I am recovering from knee surgery and should be able to keep up with them in another week or so. Berner puppies grow so fast...into such beautiful dogs :) Cindy Reid and Maine's Lake Country Nicco Corning, NY
Re: Oh where, oh where.......
Elisabeththose beautiful berners were probably just out of view behind and around all those hills and mountains :) I suggest you go back and visit the lovely little mountain villages of Murren and Gimmelwald. Five years ago I was there and in the first hour in the country I saw Berners. Coming into Bern I saw a berner out in a field and then as I pulled up to a stoplight in Bern a car pulled up along side in the other lane and when I glanced over there was a Berner in the car looking at me. Then somewhere between Interlaken and the Lauterbrunnen Valley I watched as a doorman for a restaurant held open the door for a couple and their Berner to enter the restaurant. And we no sooner stepped off the little funicular that took us to the town of Murren high up an alp (no cars there) and there was a gentleman out for an evening stroll with his Berner. All of this my first day in Switzerland. Sorry, not trying to make you feel bad. Thanks for bringing back memories of that magical place. Cindy Reid have all the Berners gone, oh where, oh where can they be? That's the question I have after having visited my home country of Switzerland once again and did not see a single Berner any where. We were only out in the country sites, no cities. We hiked all over, but never saw a Berner at any of the farmer houses we passed or out on the pastures. The same as my past 2 visits, NO BERNERS. Saw all the in dogs like Goldens, Retrievers, Akitas, etc., anything but a Berner. Can anyone on the L in Switzerland explain this. Elisabeth, Digby (all my ancestors are Swiss) and Donzi (I doubt I have a drop of Swiss in me)
Re: Return of The Fun Survery!!
My husband, Dan, and I live with 8 month old Nicco. 1 --- Do you live in a) city b) suburbs c) country d) on Planet Berner B - Outside city limits but lots of country around us...had a bald eagle in tree out back last week!!! 2 --- Where does your dog spend the night? Snuggles on the bed at bedtime then moves to his padded dogbed on the floor at the foot of our bed. More snuggles on the bed in the morning! Nicco spent his first 3-4 months in crate next to our bed. He was a very good boy and went in the crate on his own and never made a peep...he was, and is, quite the sleepyhead in the morning and would rather stay on the bed and get snuggles than motivate himself to go out to pee. Ask him if he wants to go out to go pee and he just does a long stretch and goes belly up with a big berner grin! 3 --- What is your dog's favorite toy? Nicco's favorite toys are our three cats. He has never outgrown the urge to chase those cats and sometimes comes away with a mouthful of Maine Coon fluff. I have to blame these bad manners on Nicco's breeder who does not seem to be a cat person. Libby, you raise wonderful, loving, confident, outgoing puppies but they have no respect for felines! 4 --- Your dog's most remarkable feature is (fill in the blank) His beautiful head, his love of people, his length!!! This boy is so long he cannot even lick his butt! 5 --- You bought a new car for your dog(s) Yes, we have a van bought for our first berner Travis and now enjoyed by Nicco who is a good traveler. 6 --- Your dog participates in (feel free to list any titles your dog has won) Has had obedience 101. Needs obedience 102. 7 --- The naughtiest thing that your dog has done is. At 3.5 months Nicco got carried away giving my husband kisses and pierced Dan's earlobe...on the way to our first obedience class. Dan's ear bled for the first half hour of class :( Cindy Reid and Maine's Lake Country Nicco in Corning, NY

Re: Whats so special?
When I brought my first Berner home my mother looked at me and said, He'll break your heart and you'll be crying in my arms. Well, he stole all of our hearts and though he left us early, he left us knowing the love of a Berner. We recently brought our second Berner home and in reference to the recent thread on Goldens Berners I'll add that my sister has a young Golden who is just a lovely dog but the funny thing is that she is in love with our Nicco! Every week, several times a week, she is at our door, just stopping by to see Nicco. He is eight months old now and this has been going on since we brought him home at eight weeks!!! What's special about a Berner? The Berner lean and the way they look up at you when they do that lean! The Berner Smile :) Their beauty. So many times I have witnessed people on the street who have never seen a Berner just stop in their tracks and stare speechless with a look of total wonder on their faces. And then they go head over heels in love when the Berner does the lean on them and gives them that smile! The way they love children and the way they love the elderly and will just go and quietly sit with them. The way they communicate with you! My Travis would look to me with such excitement on his face when he would notice something that was special to both him and I to make sure I had also noticed! Want to know what else is special about Berners? The great people who are involved in this breed!

Re: Stud Dog Contracts
The other honor available for stud dogs is in Stud Dog competition at specialties. This is a non-regular class where (2) of the dog's get are shown along with him. The judge evaluates the get looking for both quality and consistency. The stud dogs are then placed 1st through 4th. The same class is offered for Brood Bitches. Yes! Thank you Sherri. This is what I was referring to...just did not know what it was called but was curious as to how it was earned. Does the dog gain a title from this type of award? Cindy
Re: Stud Dog Contracts
IF the breeder keeps a puppy for herself, she takes 1st pick and I take second. My feeling is that at the bottom line, the breeder risked the life of her bitch to get the litter and therefore *should* have the option of first pick puppy. Thanks for sharing this, I am a pet owner and this post was very interesting. For some reason I always suspected that the stud dog owner had pick of litter but your comment above makes perfect sense. Thanks for the new perspective! I have another question on stud dogs for Sherri or anyone on the listwhat is a stud dog championship? How is it earned? Thanks, Cindy - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 22, 2003 6:21 AM Subject: Re: Stud Dog Contracts In a message dated 2/21/2003 9:36:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I was wondering if some of you would be willing to share a sample of your stud dog service contracts with me. Specifically a sample that includes a pick of a puppy in place of an actual stud fee. I'm trying to get a feel for what should or shouldn't be included in contracts. Hi Robin, I think that what should/shouldn't be included in a stud contract is determined by what's important to you. Some are strictly limited to setting out the terms of a business transaction (and those vary from a service fee + amount/puppy to the traditional flat fee or pick puppy). Others cover the transaction details, but also specify parameters for placement of pups and requirements for eventual screening of the puppies. You may also find that you want to have different contracts for different breedings/breeders...depending on their level of experience. Where your stud contract falls within the range depends on your own priorities. I'll pass on one general suggestion made to me which I took to heart and feel is 'a good thing'. My contract generally provides for my choice of a fee or a 1st pick puppy. But, IF the breeder keeps a puppy for herself, she takes 1st pick and I take second. My feeling is that at the bottom line, the breeder risked the life of her bitch to get the litter and therefore *should* have the option of first pick puppy. Of course, there are exceptions to everything. If I was working closely with a breeder and hoped to make a puppy from that particular litter my foundation bitch...I might discuss taking first pick with the breeder with the hope of having her full support in my plans. The other thing I try to do in my contract is to be fair. I ask for a lot in terms of health screening on the bitch, placement, and follow up of the pups... because that's what's most important to me. So in exchange I include things favorable to the breeder on the business side of things to help balance it out. -Sherri Venditti
Re: Question about chew bones for berners
For Christmas I came across a new dog bone toy from Planet Dog that seems to be indestructible. It is made from a flexible rubber and the sales person told me they really last. Well, just looking at it and feeling how flexible it is you would think your dog would be able to chew pieces off...but after a month there is not even a toothmark on Nicco's! It comes in a large size and different colors..we got the glow in the dark color and it sure does show up nice in the middle of the night. No tripping over that toy! See website below for more info: www.planetdog.com/dog-toys.asp?ID=8 Cindy Reid and Nicco, who now has his new adult chompers
Clipped Nail
Ooops! Clipped too much off the dewclaw and now it's bleeding..not too bad. I know there is something that is good to put on these type of cuts..anybody? I put a little flour on but it was licked right off. Cindy

Take advantage of it, we won't be doing this forever! One of these days we may just up and retire - and actually see a Specialty! OH! I hope you and Joye do not retire until after the 2005 Specialty...which will probably be my first. Maybe you could kind of semi-retire...just shoot Wednesday and Friday??? we have raised a grand total of $10,150 for Berner funds doing those portrait photos! Awesome! Yes, I caught it. Last 10 minutes of the show was devoted to the Berner Walk and the interview with Barry Scheiber Moritz. No mention of BARC. Re: berners and cats
I wonder how many other berner/MC owners are on the list, it seems like they go together so well! :) I have Maine Coons and they are great cats! My first is 14 year old Cricket, very fiesty girl, and also 10 year old Schooner, a talker and official greeter...loves visitors! Then there is 10 year old Taco Willy - rescued all-American stray who has been best buddy with all of our dogs...except new puppy Nicco, who plays ruff right now but T-Willy is patiently teaching pup some lessonstechnigue is a swat aimed at the nose followed by a gentle rub to pup's chin. Puppy Teeth Hiccups
OK, I know puppies lose the sharp little teeth in front and the incisors but just noticed Nicco's back molars on top are loose/out...was not expecting that. Also, hiccups..he has them every day, always for a very short duration and only once or twice a day..every day. Normal for pups?, why?, and when do they go away? New at this but all else going smooth...he's a great pup! Cindy and 4 month old Nicco
