What's better than having a flock of blackbellies to love???
Meeting a bunch of other people who are as crazy about them as you are!!
Yesterday we had the first ever Oregon Blackbelly Social here in Oregon
City. It wasn't a big group, but was it ever full of enthusiasm! Of
course we spent lots of time visiting with the sheep of Blacklocust
Farm. We made comparisons between different "families", talked about
our hopes and expectations for our breeding programs, shared photos,
gosh, there was just no end to the conversation! It was limited only by
everyone having to go home and get some dinner and feed their own
critters! And the photos! We got to see some GOOD SHEEP! Wow!
We even had some great photos to share of African Blackbellies, kindly
provided by Helmut Lang, especially for this gathering.
Everyone was really excited about the opportunity to pool resources to
get our sheep out in front of the public, to put our heads and our
resources together to keep raising the bar on quality breeding stock,
creating the best marketing opportunities for the sheep, and just
getting together for plain old fun again!
We ended up with a "how to do your own fecal exam" presentation by yours
truly, which not only um, showed my sheep were practically worm free
:o), but it also provided a whole new opportunity for a bit of hilarity
to the gathering!
Nothing somber about this bunch! :o) We are tentatively planning to
get together again in January, to visit another farm and see more
blackbellies!
I think it would be fantastic if others would give this idea a try! The
enthusiasm was just rippling yesterday, and we FINALLY got to meet some
folks we only knew over the telephone, and we added some new
acquaintances as well! We all felt we were at the start of something
really great as we parted last night.
I have a feeling that next year is going to be the Year of the
Blackbelly here in Oregon!
