Carol, you can get hinges that are made for wood gates. They are a flat
piece, maybe 1/4 inch thick and 1 inch or so wide. They are made by
taking a piece maybe 15 inches or so long. About 6 inches or so from
the end it will be bent in a small loop to fit over a hinge bolt/pin
and then folded

I don't know if you can adapt this to your situation, but I have built a
number of gate latches using cattle panels as gates, and the idea
might somehow work.
To close a cattle panel gate solidly against a post, I screw a couple of
large eyes into the post, then push the cattle panel
