I can solve this problem with adding an extra font dir in
ln -svn $XORG_PREFIX/lib/X11/fonts/OTF /usr/share/fonts/X11-OTF

where XORG_PREFIX obviously is /usr in your case. Now, get that dir
out of /etc/fonts/fonts.conf! There's a lot of crappy fonts that you
