the odd computer where there is a volume control there as well...
You might try putting a music CD in the player with headphones plugged in to
the jack in question, just to rule that out...

What was the ambient temperature when your friend took this measurement -
the computer will generate heat anyway, but it will add the energy released
as heat to the temperature from which the computer starts, which will
normally be that of the room in which it is sited...
