Last summer at the end of July, our air conditioner fan died. Seeing as how
the house was built in 86 and is a manufactured home, it wasn't a big
surprise. We live in Las Vegas where the summers are brutal. This
particular day the temperature in the house reached 102 degrees. We took
bids on a new heating and air conditioner system. We need a 4 ton air
conditioner to keep our 1500 SQF home cool.

We got the system including new lines for 5 grand installed. The owner of
the heating and air conditioning company was an old guy who had been in the
business 40 years. Wile his guys were working, we got to shooting the
breeze and the topic of filters came up. I had asked him about these
filters that claimed to trap more particles and cost much more. I asked him
if they were worth their price. He said don't use them. I said why not.
Because to trap more particles, the holes that let air through have to be
smaller. The more it traps, the smaller the holes have to be. As a result
of these filters, your fan motor pulls less air through the filter. This
means that there is less cold air getting into your house. Less air in the
house means the air conditioner will run longer trying to cool down the
house. We replace these motors all the time and they aren't cheap. People
buy into the advertising when you hear things like it removes more dust and
pet hair! Removes spoors and mores! I guess. Because of living in the
desert there is a lot more dust. I've found that by changing my filters
twice a month and using the second from the bottom filters that lets more
air through that in the long run, I'm saving more on my 400 dollar a month
electric bill and my filter cost is 120 dollars a year. Even in the owner's
manual for my heating and air conditioning system it warns against these
high end filters as doing more harm them good and actually can cause damage
to your heating and air conditioning system.
