What about threading a piece of bar stock with a die a short distance down
each end and putting a cap nut over the end with a rubber 'O' ring behind it
so the bar doesn't clang wen it drops through.
A similar solution but maybe a little cleaner.

bucks which come complete with a pair of small clamps which you can clamp
down and follow with the shoe of the saw too or, as I frequently do, just
use the factory edge of another piece of plywood.

counterproductive, particularly if you can burn outside air that you haven't
already heated. The actual temperature of the air being burned isn't
important.

couple of sheltered workshops which performed these services maybe there are
in your area. Might be a clean efficient way of having that done at
reasonable cost and provide a service at the same time.

Probably they are less likely to leaks, certainly you won't get down
drafting or vacuum locks. You may have heard of people having to open a
window when burning their fire place because when their furnace comes on the
combustion pulls smoke back down the chimney into the house.
