(dealer still does it as its still under the maint. plan)... its got 60K miles (no track)... and its a manual. The dealer is changing the pads and rotors (both of which are worn) and called the wife to tell her that an axle is leaking... Anyone run across this before? (I've got a call into the dealer to figure out WTFO) Your insight would be greatly appreciated before the dealer takes us for a $500-600 fix... Is this correct? Can one exchange the Texaco spec for any good quality Dexron III equivalent? Couple this with his find of a good deal on a used M3 set-up, complete with front and rear Bilstein's and stock springs, and the question of a swap arises. I don't know if the springs will make the car taller, I'd suggest checking the front end weight of an M3 and the 318ic as a first move. I think the control arms need changing also. Plus the brake balance will be off if using the M3 brakes. Will non M3 brakes fit an M3 strut? What about wheels and tires? Projects like these get out of hand quickly, and even when complete may only serve to muck up an otherwise nice car. I'd guess most of the problem with the car is worn bushings. Anyway, the E36 strut mounts to what the etk calls a king pin assembly. This is a mount for the brake caliper and wheel bearing assembly but I do not know if the M3 parts will bolt up to the 318 parts even though the design is similar. Based on some seat time in the car, I am positive the RTAB's and the control arm bushings on this car need refreshed along with the shocks. I need to spend some time trying to explain the potential for disaster with my co-worker, maybe I can persuade him to replace bushings first and then move on from there.
