Gruppee.

The wife's 2001 Z3 with 60K miles is intermittently flashing the
transmission warning light for the past 5 weeks. The owner's manual says
to shut down and restart after a few minutes and it has cleared it
everytime. Is this an omen of something sinister that I should seriously
look into now before Halloween?

TIA

Not kidding, in cleaning out more old stuff I came upon a gold
color TI that was on the car for the less than a month it took for BMW
to order the dealer to buy it back.
Also, two orange and black checked rear 2002 OEM floormats, little
used, VG condition, perfect for that inca orange 2002 restoration.
Any idea what these last of their kind items are worth?
Will trade for similar E36 //M3 dress up items, maybe a set of OEM //M3
front floormats +?? Located in SF Bay Area.

Subject: S14 Main Bearings-Stroker project?
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Well, my 2.5L stroker project might be getting accelerated. Good thing I'm
almost finished fixing up the new DD (e30 318is) in time for the cold when
the M3 goes into hibernation anyway...

My question: As I've never experienced a main bearing failure, I'm just
guessing at the symptoms. The S14 has always needed some 'warm-up time'
before running smooth. At 136k, it may be time to tear into it an see what's
going on in there. Is there any definitive way to diagnose main bearing
problems w/o tear-down? It's pretty loud, and down some on power, but still
revs fine at idle...under load...some loud vibrations, sounds like a
rattling exhaust might sound at low RPM. I put the e36 Chain tensioner in
there 3 yrs ago, which helped quiet things down significantly, but did not
do anything to the guides in there. I've been meaning to clean-up the intake
side and finally get all the vacumm leaks fixed. I should take it off the
road, right? As failure can be catastrophic? Like I needed another
project...so it goes.

VAC Motorsporst stroker kit...any experience out there? Are there others to
consider? I guess I could just rebuild the bottom end to stock for a lot
cheaper, but I'm guessing once it's torn down...other issues will become
apparent.

Cheers!

Main bearings get much better oiling and have much lower loading than rod
bearings, so that is where you will find a problem. Pull the pan and pop
some rod caps. That is fairly easy, and the engine can stay in the car and
STOP RUNNING THE ENGINE until you do this.

John - are you on the E30 M3 SIG mailing list? This is a question where
you would likely get a lot more data points and BTDT
answers to this question.

Just curious...
John

Subject: <E34> Rear Suspension clunking
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Car is a 94 540iA with 156k miles running Bilstein Sports and Bav Auto
springs.

Lately I've been getting a good clunk/rattle in the back right corner. It
sounds like the right rear shock might just come out through the rear parcel
shelf. It's loud over small bumps, lots of rattles, etc. Drives fine on
the highway once things are smooth.

I'm assuming it is a blown RSM. Can I confirm this from the inside of the
car, after I've taken the rear seat out? Is there an easier way to check
this?

Looking from under the car the trailing arm links (dog bones?) look pretty
bad as well, so I figure I should change those out while I have it apart.

Is there something else I should be looking for that could be causing this
type of clunking?

Is there anything else in the back end that I really should change out while
I'm back there?

I'm in a *very* low-cost mode, so I really just want to fix this and be
done, but an extra $100 of parts to do it right would be okay.

Thanks in advance,

Doug
