Another very effective transplant that you may want to consider is to put
the M52 into an E39 528i (find one with a 5-speed). Essentially a drop-in,
and you end up with a car that's almost as quick as a 540i, with better
handling and gas mileage. It is essentially a drop-in as well. There was a
write-up on this in Car and Driver a few years ago about one that Turner
built, and I'm aware of someone who did this with an E39 wagon.

Same goes for the E34 5-series, or with more work any
garden-variety E30. Brett A. has put the S52/manual trans
combo into an E34 525iT. Toss in a Quaife and E34 M5
brakes, and you've got a sleeper station wagon that's tough
to beat.

Not knowing how good of a friend they are, I would be surprised if one of my
'friends' didn't make it good when it came to light. I would never even
think twice about buying back a car with damage that I sold to a friend or
complete stranger. It is just a bad thing to do period. Not knowing is
not an excuse. To me it was not luck he dumped it before discovering the
damage, he just missed a bullet that was meant for him.

I would atleast suggest to this friend to help with the costs of
replacement, swapping to another E36 etc.

But that is just my opinion and what I would hold myself to do.

Mike

Neil,

I agree with you that Gislaved has some new products that are very
good. In some cases where Nokian does not offer a particular size, or is
out of stock on a tire, I often will sell the Gislaveds as a good
alternative. However, Nokian has more tire choices that fit different
needs than does Gislaved, and Gislaved's pricing is very reasonable as
well. No problem with Gislaved tires from my perspective.
