This 220,000 car is new to me (an '87 735ia), but it feels like a bigger
version of my '87 535is. OK, maybe not quite as sporting, but I like it. Going
through trying to fix the things that will make my wife want to keep the car,
like fixing non-op heater control valve, repack front wheel bearings, new push
strut bushings, and getting rid of balky accelerator pedal action and slight
hesitation upon starting.

The throttle at the throttle body moves smoothly enough (seems to hang up on
cruise control when moved by hand). But, it takes extra pedal pressure to get
the accel. moving. Need I remove the cable to properly clean and lubricate
it, or can this be done in car?

Will look for the hesiation once I fix his.

Heater control valve advice, please: where is the "cowl" commonly referred
to as requiring removal in order to change heater hoses (where they connect to
the core).

Thanks to all,
Me and my 220,000 grey sled in Oakland

I lost compression in one cylinder of my 325i (it's a
1992) so I pulled the head off and the exhaust valves
were bent and the piston had a couple of nicks out of
it. All of the other valves and pistons look fine. Has
anyone got any idea what could have caused this. I
replaced the head over a year ago and everything
seemed to be running fine until a couple of months
ago. Could I have done something wrong with getting
the timing set that would cause this? Any help is
greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I assume you mean the low pressure ports on your SCUBA regulator? The tank has only
one high pressure outlet to fit the regulator (3,000 psi on a typical tank). Most
SCUBA regulators "low" pressure is set around 140 psi. The problem here is not low
pressure, it's the relatively low volume (compared to what the impact wrench needs)
that the regulator is able to supply. By the way, how did you attatch the air hose to
the regulator? The threads on the regulator port are not the same as regular air hose
threads. At least not on any I have seen.

To get this setup to work, you will need some sort of tank between the SCUBA regulator
and the impact wrench, so that it can store up some air volume at 140 psi.

Hope this helps.

"IIRC, the low pressure port is supposed to be around 200 psi. Is this correct? Or
is the cheap impact wrench the problem? Any ideas how to get this to work?"

I noticed lately a big puff of blue smoke indicating oil when I first start the car
but nothing afterwards.

While changing out the alternator I noticed a large puddle of oil in the rubber hose
connecting the air intake to the throttle body.

Anyone have an idea what would cause this and how to fix?

Other than startup it doesn't burn oil and oil use is low for a car with 200k + miles.

As usual, thanks in advance for all of the advice.

It sounds like they are saying they have a minimum tread requirement for a
tire to be repairable which makes sense.

At 15,000 smile miles the tires on my M5 are usually within of 2-3k miles of
being at or past the wear bars and ready for replacement. I kept a set on to
20k and was showing cord on the front.

I think 15K miles is pretty good for an M car. I used to go through a set of
tires every 12K miles.

Anybody heard of these? Not sure about the "American" quality, but they do
have a lifetime warranty, unless I missed the fine print.

The ad list them for M3s, but they should fit any e36, correct?

I do not know of those specifically, but they
certainly appear to be like every or cheap "blue"
bulb. All you are guaranteed to get is probably lower
light output because of the blue coating. I do not
know why the guy has a comparison of HID vs stock
since these are not high-intensity bulbs. The bulbs
that look most promising if you need replacements are
the Philips Silver Star, although I have not seen any
independant tests on those (Car and Driver should toss
them on a long term car and write up if it is better
or just the same) Either way, I strongly recommend
against any of those "dipped" bulbs.

Headlight Bulb Comparison:

Last summer I bought a pair if SilverStar German made and a pair of
SuperWhite Asian made H1 55w bulbs. Comparing the quality of materials
and workmanship, the German bulbs appear better made. Thicker metal,
better stampings, etc.
I installed one each in the high beam and low beams of E36 ellipsoids.
I cleaned the glass with alcohol before installing. The illumination of
the bulbs is nearly the same, SuperWhites a bit 'whiter', SilverStar
seemed to give less glare and more towards thespectrum of an HID.
Before these, I had tried standard style 100w H1 bulbs but they were
burning out in a few months and found singed insulation at the bulb
connectors in the wiring in the ellipsoid housing. Both the SilverStar
and SuperWhite 55w a clear and noticeable step better than the regular
H1 100 watt.
After half a year one of the SuperWhite's burned out. Two weeks
later the other one did. I replaced them with SilverStars. At about a
year old now, 12k suburban miles a year with half at night, the first
SilverStar low beam I installed is still fine.

I've got a bunch of odds and ends for sale. All prices are 'or best offer', and are
without shipping. I can e-mail photos of anything if you're
interested. I also have a bunch more interior and mechanical take-off parts, as well
as Blaupunkt speakers, a CD head unit, and a 4-channel
amp. E-mail me if there is something specific you're looking for.

4-Piece Black Plush Floormats - $50
This is a complete set of custom floormats, black plush carpet, with the UUC logo
embroidered on the front mats. The rears were never used,
and the fronts show only slight wear.

Black Plush Rear Trunk Mat - $50
Matching black plush carpet trunk mat to fit all E36's. Similar to the factory M3
part, but with deeper pile and no embroidery.

Z3 Solutions Leather Armrest - $25
This is a padded black leather armrest that fits into either the cupholder or ashtray
portion of the E36 3-series and Z3 console
(http://64.225.94.154/ShopSite/page2.html\). Great piece for a track car if you don't
want the annoying larger arm rest.

E36 Cupholder Console - $30
Also see (http://64.225.94.154/ShopSite/page2.html\). This is the black factory
cupholder console for the E36 and Z3.

E36 Harmon Kardan Rear Speaker Enclosures w/ Blaupunkt 6x9's - $50
The factory rear speakers on the E36 are 4x6's. These are the 6x9 speaker enclosures
from the HK system, with aftermarket Blaupunkt 3-way
6x9's adapted to fit. Great bass and it plugs right into the factory system.

Black Leather E36 ///M Rear Seats - $200

These are just more of those cheap "blue bulbs" - it looks like. I am
betting the stock VS HID picture is not done using these bulbs but with
real HID lamps ($500-600 a pair).

Most folks have good luck with Sylvania SilverStar lamps. A step up in
produced light with a silver/blue tint. In most applications, you can
use the XtraVision bulbs to get about as much light for less cost (but
no blue tint).

AutoZone, Advanced Auto, etc carry these bulbs.

Brett,

I have and hold good vacuum. The problem appears to be getting any heat
into the cabin. This is the push button control type and when in "Up/Down"
or "Auto" mode for eg. the doors open properly and air is re-directed as it
should be. Just no heat.
I'm going to disconnect the vacuum line to the heater valve and force open
the valve and see if coolant comes into the core by gauging the air temp or
the temp. of the return line. I'm thinking that maybe this "control unit"
is the culprit if it controls the blending or solenoid operations.
Otherwise it might be one of the control panels or even one of the temp
sensors.
