Where are the comments you mention? Letters from members in Tech Talk?

I sold BMWs from 1976 to 1998. The E36 does have it's flaws and weak
points but it's a hell of a buy in the $5-10,000 range. That being
said, a 325i is usually no cheaper than a 525i of the same year and I
know which one is built better! Unless you just like the little car,
there are some great buys on '95 525i 5-speeds and with a chip, some
M3 cams, and a suspension refresh, it's a damn nice car to drive and
built quite a bit more solidly than an E36. But no BMW is
bullet-proof, short of an E28 535i! Heck, there are even some pretty
damn good buys on E39 528i's out there under $10k right now.

Against my better judgement, I bought an E36/5 318ti for my kids to
drive. A '98 with around 120k, one owner, very well maintained.
Bought if from a Club member for just over $5k and had to put tires,
brakes, and a driver's window regulator on it right away. Certain
items such as door panel are generally cheap on the E36 and even more
so on the ti. The headliner is also junk on the ti and I don't think
it's terribly different on the non-hatchback cars. Depending on where
you are, the AST traction-control which became optionally available
on the E36 in 1994 is a must-have. Mine has been a blast in the snow
recently and we all like it in spite of its flaws!

All E36s have crappy headlamps in the US so be prepared to upgrade to
the very expensive European lights, be blind at night, or check an
upcoming Roundel for Don E's tale of how to upgrade the sorry units
on a budget.

The comment(s) were in Tech Talk from Mike Miller.

Dave, so far I haven't seen one important question addressed. What do
you plan to do with the car? And then this follow-up, do you plan to
keep it stock?

My next BMW will be a 4 door. My friends and family are all getting
too old to climb into the back seat of a 2 door - except for our
daughter, and I feel bad even when she needs to climb in back. So I'd
buy a 4 door.

Will you be carrying more than 1 passenger often? If so, I'd look for
an E34 535i. In fact, a list member has a nice 5 speed for sale right
now (hint hint Karl).

Is this mainly for yourself and the occasional single passenger? Then
the E36 would be hard to beat. It does have its weak points (plastic
water pump, radiator neck), but those can be fixed easily enough.

If you plan to use the car for autocross or on track, look into
getting the floor reinforced around the area of the rear sub-frame.
It is a weak point for cars that see high g loads. The E36 M3 comes
already reinforced, but it will be beyond your price range. Also, be
aware of the lifter ticking after an autocross run. Some owners
slightly over-fill the crankcase to counter this.

If you plan to make lots of mods and the mods have to fall within your
$10K budget, then an E30 325i or an E28 535is would be better for your
budget.

Drive it. I already have three cars...a Toyota MR2...a E30...and a Land
Rover Discovery...so I am pretty well covered for car 'types'. Primarily
we are looking for something to play with as we don't really 'need'
another car but I am getting bored of driving and wrenching on what I
already have. Need something 'new'. Just got the itch for a new model.

Probably not. I am not interested in keeping anything for sale at a
later date so any mods that catch my fancy would be game. I am not into
staying stock for the sake of being stock but I don't have plans for any
major mods.

Not real often. We are a family of three and we already have a 4dr E30
and the Disco can carry seven. Plus, I work from home, so my wife is the
only person that needs to drive anywhere each day...so its not often
that we need to carry many people.

Most often the car would carry a single person and perhaps a passenger
or two from time to time.

I am not factoring immediate maintenance or mods into the price...I am
looking to spend the $10K on the initial purchase. Every few years we
like to buy a 'new to us' car and pay cash. We are not big fans of car
payments in this house...not when so many great cars can be had for so
cheap these days.

A new family member will arrive any day now and I spend a lot more time with
my kids (soon to be 3 under the age of 4!), and life is just generally much
busier these days. So......time to sell off the toys right now and take a
couple years off, you know, til the oldest is old enough to spend time at
the track with me. ; )

Anyway, here is a link to the webpage with tons of pics and details:

http://www.elephantmotorsports.com/forsale/racing_stuff_FS.htm

Some details.....

Truck: Ford F350 4X4 crew cab SRW w/approx 47k miles, black exterior
w/matching Leer cap, Rhino Liner since new, pretty much all power options
including pedals and both seats, gray cloth interior, towing package w/3.73
LSD, upgraded aluminum wheels, much more.

There has been a fair bit of interest in the truck, both local and through
the web but no one has pulled the trigger. I'd rather sell it than keep
making payments...and putting miles on it. Was asking $31k, now lowered to
$29.5k! Buy it, you won't regret it and you'll never think about towing
again.

Car: 1995 BMW M3 prepared for CM. Euro 3.2l (3.0l bored and stroked to
3.2l), intake/head work, custom tuned (dyno sheet available for those who
are serious), euro 6spd, custom 4.27 diff w/cooler, FG
fenders/hood/decklid/doors, CF PTG wing, 2 sets of 18x9 wheels, 5 sets of
tires (3 are competitive, 2 are for practice), Brembo front brakes, stock
rear, lots of pads, JRZ remote reservoir shocks, world challenge sway bars,
MOMO Acropolis seat, CF dash, spares...lots, see webpage for more details.
Price is $34k which is a lot less than I paid less than on year ago, i drove
it only 4 times in the last year! And I've put several $k into it. If you
want a front running car this is it, no building, very little test/tuning
required. Get in and drive and win, PERIOD.

Please email with interest! Thanks!

It's tough to stick a race car in there, and there's no way
the truck'll fit ... easier to sell 'em I guess.

Oh! Just realized you weren't referring to the car. ;-)

Thanks guys (Jim Basset and Brett and whoever else I've left out) for the
help on the outside sport mirror on the M3. It turned out the be the two
wires shared with the mirror heater (blue and brown?). They were literally
out of their connectors. I have this suspicion that the previous owner did
some really crappy things with this car.(more later). The rear side of the
motor/acutator module had the wire color guide embossed on the backside
making things easy to put back together.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

After fixing the M3 mirror I went to investigate the alarm siren. After
peeling off about a rolls worth of nylon tape I found that the wires from
the siren were just bare pigtails stuffed into the female part of the car's
harness. I tested the siren (BMW# 82 111 469 447)with a 9V battery and it
works. One item down.

The problem is this, at the control end (female connector) which I assume
goes to the alarm module, there is 12 volts across the connector but with
the alarm in non-activated mode. With the alarm activated the voltage goes
down to a little higher than 0.5V.

This can't be right. Are the stock modules known to fail in this way. The
other indicators work as expected, that is the side and parking lights
flash.

The previous owner (blockhead) gave me some kind of crap about burning out
the siren. I can't quite figure out why he went through all the trouble of
taping up the connection when, if as I suspect, the connector is always hot
and would have kept the siren going all the time.

A coworker is not getting any heat to the passenger compartment. This weekend
he replaced the thermostat, which was broken. Susbsequent driving shows the
engine temperature regulation is working, but the passenger compartment is not
receiving any heat. Is there a means to test the heater valve to diagnose
whether it has died?

Hello,

I've recently noticed a ticking sound coming from the
region under the steering wheel.  It is fairly random;
my guess is that it is an electrical relay/switch, but
I have no idea which one. I've also experienced this
in my cobra as well.

Any ideas what it might be and how to get rid of it?

By any chance could it be your keychain swinging like a pendulum tapping
