Gruppe, the last bit of the puzzle to the firm brake pedal is adjusting
the free play in the pedal. Straight out of the Bentley:

http://home.carolina.rr.com/mpowercreative/M3/FreePlay.jpg

I think my E30 M3 is the only BMW I've owned (out of 5) that had that
1" of dead travel. I did the free play adjustment and it helped a
little bit, I did however, go very conservative on the adjustment only
a couple of turns tops as I didn't want the calipers partially engaged
all the time. On that car brand new pads (over and over) and a
pressure bleed afterwards made the most difference before the free play
adjustment.

Hope that helps,
Carlos.

Which are OK and which are subpar? I suspect there isn't anything wrong with
buying from any of them? Or do you have other views on that?

Striking a chord... I've been putting this off for some time, but David's
email is pushing me over the edge, I guess <sigh>. The wife's 2000 528iT is
going on the market. I bought this as a present to her when we had our
daughter two years ago. She had to transition her daily driver from a 996
C2 to this - heck, it was a compromise, as I had suggested a minivan, but
she demanded a sportvagon!

So, 2000 528iT, 2nd owner, 54k-ish miles, silver/black, excellent condition
inside and out, Sport package (inc. sport seats, sport wheel, sport
suspension, shadowline sport trim, 17" BBS wheels, Steptronic transmission,
heated seats, rain sensing wipers. A few other options, I can look them up
when I actually get off my lazy butt to put together a real ad, but mostly
nicely equipped, though I kinda wish it had a ski bag (seat heaters but no
ski bag? Weird ordering). No problems if I recall, other than the
incredibly annoying failures of the rear seat belt retractors.

Anyway, I'll put together a real ad at some point, and take some pics too.
It's a nice wagon. Why am I selling it? Well, baby #2 is arriving very,
very soon, and, uh, um, "honey, I need to sell your wagon because we have
too many cars as it is, and uh, I ordered you, um, a new Nissan Armada so
that we can schlepp the babies and the strollers and all the STUFF and, um,
well, because I'm buying an enclosed trailer too so that I can store the 355
Challenge that I just bought (didn't I mention that?) and tow it to the
track, so I need something with a lot of towing capacity, and since we now
have two Ferraris, and soon will have two kids, I guess we really can't
justify keeping your 996 either, but that's ok since you never drive it
anymore, so if we sell both of your cars, then we can keep the Challenge in
the trailer next to the garage, and keep the 355 street car IN bay #1, and
well, I don't know if the Armada will fit in bay #2, so I guess I'll just
have to park my 740 in there, and we can just leave the Armada in the
driveway, which is just fine, because I'm not sure there's enough room to
leave two cars in the driveway, what with the giant trailer taking up all
that room... Sounds good? I love you too honey!!!!!!"

Ahem.

Anyway, anyone interested, make an offer! (otherwise it'll get traded in
when the Armada gets here....)

==================

Ah! Well, I just sort of stumbled onto these cars. The 740iL is my primary
daily driver - I really, really love it, even more so than an E39, mostly
because I'm a tall, big guy and I have lots more room in the 740. The 996
was a V-day present for my wife, and her daily driver until my daughter
arrived on the scene. The 355B was the "toy". So the sports cars sat in
the garage, while my poor 740 toiled in the driveway. Then the Principessa
arrived, so we had to get the 528iT. Then I sort of stumbled on the 355CH,
and I *just* had to take it, with the intent of playing with it for a bit
then reselling it, but since I can't ever sell anything (I usually drive
things until they die; E28 gray market M535i until 175k miles, Mustang GT
5.0 on original clutch until 147k miles, currently 144k miles on the 740 and
still going strong), I dunno if the Challenge car is going to go anywhere.
:-)

Which brings me up to the Armada. And since I live in a tiny house with a
small two car garage and a narrow driveway, you can see my conundrum. I'm
in the market for an enclosed trailer (anyone got one for sale?), so I can
stick the Challenge car in that and park that alongside the garage, leaving
enough room for two cars, which would be the 355B and the 996 (or at least
until I sell that, assuming I get around to it). I really don't think the
Armada will fit, so . . . Hah! The 740 gets back inside! Woo-hoo!

Well, that's the plan anyway. The alternative is to sell everything except
the 740, buy a minivan, and spent the remainder of the proceeds on a big
addition to the house, which might involve a bigger garage, but then I won't
have anything to fill the spaces up... :-(

Cincinatti area, something between the $299 Maaco special and a high end
$5000 high quality paint job.

Anyone know of a shop that does a nice job somewhere in the middle range
to lower end, $1500-$2500.

Thanks

You can play it safe driving bimmers and f-cars 'til you're in the grave.

I agree with Scott. Go for the minivan. Now. None of us are getting
any younger!

BUT (and this is the key to total enjoyment of the experience), don't
get sucked in by the new model sheen of the Quest. To really
experience the experience (p intended), you must instead purchase a
well used mid-80's vintage Grand Voyager. Preferably in the blue that
fades terribly, then peels in random locations.

Next, you'll want to set it up with an accessory rear anti-sway bar and
Monroe Gasmatics at all four corners. To cap it off, installation of
any vintage Pioneer Supertuner stereo with Jensen 6 x 9 speakers in the
rear liftgate is highly recommended.

Before embarking on this journey, realize that once you arrive, you
will never be satisfied going back to the effete Euro-brands!

Tom,
Ugh, flashbacks of days long ago camping out for Memorial Day weekend
races at Lime Rock. Do I really want to remember that?<) Whatever
happened to Torlon plastic engine blocks, and when GTP was a series
worth watching?
Barry
OBMWC: Monroe GasaMatics back then made a great 'poor man's Bilstein',
using Monroe's listed for a Mustang GT on the rear of E30s.
Also try 4x10"s superior even to the 6x9"s, for chalk on blackboard
levels of harmonic distortion at high volumes after a few months of
sunbaking on the deck behind the rear seat.

Well after some nice 85 degree days last week it was 30 degrees Saturday
and I tried the doors and they locked remotely. There is definitely a
correlation between ambient air temp and door locks functioning. Anyone
have any experience with door locks failing in warm temps? They worked
this morning and the temp was 40 degrees. I have seen door lock and
window motors on other cars fail in warm temp but in those cases the
gears/tracks are dirty and the motor loses power as heat increases. In
this case the motor works fine just not remotely. Thanks for the
previous responses. I am posting again because I now have more info and
thought it might help. I am looking for any ideas before I go and rip
everything out this weekend.

I have a bizarre problem on my E36. The doors will not lock when I use
the remote for keyless entry. All the locks are functioning and if I am
in the car and lock the drivers door then all the locks lock. Likewise
if I use the key in the drivers door all the locks lock. If the doors
are locked and I click the remote then all the doors will unlock as
normal and the car will chirp twice and disable the alarm. If I hit the
button with the doors unlocked I get a single chirp and the alarm is
turned on but the doors do not actually lock. This problem started to
happen last year at the end of the summer. When it got cold out
everything started working again. Now that it is getting warm again the
doors will not lock when I click the button on the remote. Anyone have
any suggestions on where to start? It seems as though everything is
fine and that it is just not sending a signal to the door locks. Is
there a way to change the functionality on the system? I have not
changed anything, at least not that I am aware of, but now that it is
getting warm the door locks seem to stop locking again. Any advice
would be appreciated. Thanks

Kind of pricey, but may be worth it.

______________

I bought one last year for use on my 996, and have been very impressed with
it. http://www.autoenginuity.com/

I actually bought it off of eBay, where the company has regular sales, and
saved quite a few bucks from what they charge
on the site. I got the Palm version, so I can use it more easily in the car.

Oh, at the time (and maybe now too), in addition to complete OBD-II
functionality, the Autoenginuity tester ALSO came with an additional piece
of software, "SpeedTracer", for FREE, which "is a performance analysis
software for your PC or PDA. Are you curious if that new part worked? Is
your vehicle performing to its fullest capabilities? With SpeedTracer, we
can help you answer those questions. Save hundreds of dollars running dynos
on your vehicles. What's more, you can run the performance analysis at YOUR
convenience--not regular shop hours.

What it can do:

0-60ft time
0-60 MPH
1/8 mile time
1/8 mile speed
1/4 mile time
1/4 mile speed
G Forces
SAE Horsepower
Torque
SAE Horsepower and Torque vs RPM graphing
Speed vs Time graphing
_____________

All way, way cool. Of course, I haven't had the time (nor the long empty
stretch of flat road) to play with it yet, but for any of you considering
getting an OBD-II tool, you might want to get this as SpeedTracer appears to
be a really great way to validate all of the performance mods to your car.
Now you can really see if that K&N air filter or new chip or exhaust has
improved your performance....

Well, it seems I need to do some suspension work. I looked at the old tires I
am pulling off for my new S-03's and the rears wore very evenly across the
tread with maybe a slight bias towards the inner edge. The fronts were worn
slick on the inside, with fair to good tread going to the outside. there are
signs of cupping and feathering and they were shimming a bit when I took them
off, especially on braking...they really shimmied.

I tested the outer ball-joints by squeezing with channel locks like I read some
place and they have some give...basically that plastic insert allowing about a
1/4" of vertical play. I don't think they should do this unless you folks know
something I don't??? The car is 9 years old and has 80,000 miles on it, so it
is likely time to do some repair/upgrades.

I figure new control arms/bushings, probably the all metal joints and maybe
urethane or some other firmer bushing. New struts, likely Koni. Should I
replace anything else while I am having it done...maybe the top
mounts/bearings? Spring seat isolators? etc? I may put in some form of
adjustable upper mounts to maybe adjust out some of my uneven tread wear. I
figure I should get every thing that should be done, done at one time as
because of my back I am going to likely have to have someone else install this
and want to save on multiple labor charges.

Is there anything else I should be worrying about under there??? How about in
the rear???

I am open for all suggestions as to setups, etc. I want to keep a relatively
supple, but controlled ride. I am also looking for durability...such as, are
the urethane mounts harder on the frame, etc.

thanks for reading.
