That may well be, but then so too should Debian Etch, which Ubuntu is based
on, and Knoppix, which is also Debian. With these very popular distros

You're right. The manual supposes that Grub files are there. And

/boot/grub/stage1 when it doesn't exist? Naturally it's not going to find
