ESA-2016-065: EMC Avamar Data Store and Avamar Virtual Edition Multiple
Vulnerabilities

EMC Identifier: ESA-2016-065
CVE Identifier: CVE-2016-0903, CVE-2016-0904, CVE-2016-0905, CVE-2016-0920,
CVE-2016-0921
Severity Rating: See below for individual scores for each CVE

Affected products:
• EMC Avamar Data Store (ADS) and Avamar Virtual Edition (AVE) versions
prior to 7.3.0

Summary:
EMC Avamar Data Store (ADS) and Avamar Virtual Edition (AVE) 7.3 contain fixes
for multiple vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities may expose the Avamar
clients and servers to potentially be compromised by malicious users.

Details:

The following vulnerabilities were addressed in EMC Avamar 7.3 versions:

1. Improper client side authentication (CVE-2016-0903)
Certain communications between Avamar client and Avamar Server were using a
weak authentication scheme. An attacker could impersonate an Avamar client
agent to restore affected clients’ backup data from the server. All agent and
server communications are now authenticated using certificate-based
authentication. See the Product Security Guide for more details.

CVSSv3 Base Score: 8.1 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)

2. Improper encryption of communication channel (CVE-2016-0904)
The communication between Avamar agent and Avamar server was encrypted using
static keys. An attacker with knowledge of the static keys could potentially
eavesdrop on this communication. Communication is now protected using
certificates uniquely generated during server installation and client
registration. See the Product Security Guide for more details.

CVSSv3 Base Score: 7.0 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:L)

3. Privilege escalation via sudo (CVE-2016-0905)
Avamar admin level user is able to gain root privileges on the node using sudo
command without providing root credentials.

CVSSv3 Base Score: 6.7 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)

4. Command Injection in sudo script (CVE-2016-0920)
A certain command accessible via sudo is vulnerable to a command injection when
parsing its parameters. A malicious Avamar user can pass specially crafted
parameter and execute commands as root.

CVSSv3 Base Score: 6.7 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)

5. Privilege escalation due to weak file permissions (CVE-2016-0921)
Weak permissions for certain Avamar directories may allow Avamar admin user to
replace affected directories and scripts with their own and execute them with
root privileges.

CVSSv3 Base Score: 6.7 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)
