Dear CASPERites, and 2019 PIRE Summer School participants, Thanks to the CASPER community for lots of interest in CASPER 2019, August 12-16, Center for Astrophysics | Harvard and Smithsonian, Cambridge, MA, USA. The program is coming together very well, most people making contributions have received feedback, a few who have not will very soon, and that’s not a bad sign.
https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/events/2019/casper/ <https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/events/2019/casper/> 1. Early registration at a discounted price of $200 until 8 July (when it increases to $250) is open: https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/events/2019/casper/CASPER2019_files/registration.html <https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/events/2019/casper/CASPER2019_files/registration.html> 2. Hotel block bookings are available at discounted prices. Boston is expensive, we’ve been able to negotiate block rates in the region of $220 per night, plus or minus, plus taxes and fees, which can be quite a bit. For those for which this is out of budget, it is usually possible in the US to share a hotel room at no extra cost, and one can ask for a pair of beds. There are other ideas such as the Bettina Network, and the usual AirBnB for those who want to be creative. https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/events/2019/casper/CASPER2019_files/logistics.html <https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/events/2019/casper/CASPER2019_files/logistics.html> 3. The registration page linked above also details how to apply for partial travel support, which is need and merit based. To improve your chances please apply by 24 June, we will take applications after, but when we run out of funds that’s it. We hope to turn around For those who might only attend part of the time, note that we plan a set of fundamental tutorials including radio astronomy principals, the basics of DSP from both an algorithmic and technological perspective on the first two days, 12, 13 August, and then 14, 15, 16 August will include reseahc talks in the morning, and practical sessions / hands-on and working group breakouts in the afternoon. There will be industry road map talks from senior people from Xilinx, The Mathworks and elsewhere included with scheduling of those constrained by their availability. On Thursday evening, Robert Woodrow Wilson (aka Bob), Co-CMB and cosmic carbon monoxide discovere has very kindly agreed to give a public talk on the history of radio astronomy at Bell Labs—the field started there with Jansky. The program is in an advanced stage and we to post it in outline in a few days, keep your eye out (we may not email every time there is an update). Ask questions of casper2...@cfa.harvard.edu <mailto:casper2...@cfa.harvard.edu> if you have any. In particular those needing personalized invitation letters for visas can request via this address. Kind regards, and thanks very much again for your interest.
