very cheerful and welcome sight in December!

Hello,
Brad Walker and I had a better than average morning at Stewart Park. As
Chris noted, many geese were flying overhead. I was pretty sure I heard
Tundra Swans calling at one point but wasn't able to locate them. See

In spite of intensive searching on the part of the counters yesterday, the
Snowy Owl was not found.
It will be interesting to see if it turns up somewhere on the Complex on the
Winter Raptor Survey this much-calmer afternoon.

While perusing USA Today in Wegman's Cafe, I read a brief article about a
surprising abundance of eight Snowy Owls counted in Kansas. The phenomenon
was linked to a normal, cyclical low in the number of arctic rodents,
driving the owls south. If so, perhaps we too shall be lucky.

Highlights among previously reported sightings, about 1:30 pm picked out a
single dark adult SNOW GOOSE, and a GB HERON at the swan pen.

Hi all,
Eric's shrike was there in the same field again today, between about 1:45 and
3:30 pm. Perching both on hay bales and in the more distance hedgerows. At one
point caught a mouse after watching from a haybale, shook it vigorously, and
eventually flew off with it presumably to cache. Fun
