[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds
I had a wonderful treat this morning. I spotted a large group of bluebirds land in the maple tree by the road. They flew off quickly, with a few coming in closer on the Beech tree. I went to the sunroom on the south side of the house and my hunch was right. They were after the winterberries. Another large Maple is near the winterberry bush so most of them landed in the tree while a few were on the bush. There were 10 bluebirds in all-mostly males. Such a pretty sight with the snow softly falling. They checked out some older winterberries and tried a few red chokeberries. They stayed around the yard for about a half hour until the trash truck scared them off. It was interesting to watch the interactions with the other yard birds. The English Sparrows kept jockeying for position in the tree. The Bluebirds seemed to want to be highest. It was a nice, birdy morning. While the Bluebirds were here, I also spotted cardinals, chickadees, goldfinches, house finches, juncos, and downy woodpeckers. Such a nice way to start the day. I haven't had many birds, other than house sparrows and chickadees this winter. The weather has been too warm for them to need the feeders. Oh, I've had tree sparrows here at times. I'm missing my nuthatches and tufted titmouses. [cayugabirds-l] Feeder Birds Yellow-rumped Warbler
I should have posted this yesterdayWe had a Yellow-rumped Warbler at one of our feeders late yesterday (1/4) AM. Unfortunately we are outside of the Christmas count circle. It was seen once, and flew when (I'm assuming) it noticed my movement in the house. I have not seen it again today. Today we have had a rather pugnacious Brown-headed Cowbird around that was assertive enough to chase 2 Blue Jays from a picnic table I had put seed on. Both times it leveled itself out, spread it's wings part way and charged the Jay, which flew off to a branch nearby. [cayugabirds-l] broken-winged grackle
I've been studying a partly crippled Common Grackle at my feeders over the past few days. One of its wings trails along the ground as it moves, but it can fly short distances to perch on a branch. It arrived along with a large mixed flock of starlings and cowbirds but stayed on after they flew away. It's doing well enough for now with all the seed I put out, but I'm wondering what its chances are over the coming weeks, even months. Any insights? [cayugabirds-l] Myers, Th 1/5 (American Pipits)
At midday on Thursday, I found two AMERICAN PIPITS at Myers Point. I first saw the two birds flying north together across Salmon Creek. They showed plain brown plumage without white in the wings, plus dark tails with white outer feathers. At Salt Point, I confirmed the identity of one pipit as it foraged in the gravel and leaf litter, tail often bobbing. Applying modest effort, I found no unusual waterfowl, gulls, or raptors. Re: [cayugabirds-l] CayugaRBA PEREGRINE FALCON atop Holiday
I was heading toward City Hall for the second time today. The first time I had set off the metal detector because I forgot I was wearing binoculars, so I made an exception to my rule always to carry binoculars when going outside during daylight. That's when I saw a large falcon fly across Green Street from the Commons, over the Library, and settle on one of the antenna-like things sticking up from the top of the Holiday Inn. A year or two ago I saw a Peregrine Falcon perched there before, and that time I proceeded to briefly but embarrassingly, misidentify it as a Gyrfalcon. I was reluctant to spread the word without double-checking this time. Fortunately I had driven (my visit earlier today was by bike), my car was parked a block away, I had both binoculars and scope in the car (second rule: bring scope when traveling by car in daylight), and the bird was in view of the sidewalk nearby where I set up my tripod: beautiful adult PEREGRINE FALCON.Clearly I should stick to my rule and bring my binoculars. I enjoyed watching the bird while I waited for the traffic light to change. As I went through the metal detector again, I mentioned to the cop that the binoculars came in handy because there was a Peregrine atop the Holiday Inn. He said, "Yeah, it's been around a lot lately." Maybe he was playing games with me, or maybe he was passing along a misidentification. Karen Edelstein has mentioned a Sharp-shinned Hawk feeding in the shrubbery next to City Hall a couple of times recently. I felt a bit deflated, but there is no particular reason why I should be the first to notice such a spectacular bird over busy downtown Ithaca. When I asked who had seen the Peregrine before,he didn't give me any leads. Anyway, if it were seen New Year's Day it would be another species for the Christmas Bird Count, and if it were first seen Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday it would still be a Count Week bird. So ask around, has anybody noticed a Peregrine in Ithaca earlier this week? Maybe that person can also get first credit for finding one in the Cayuga Lake Basin in 2012 if it was on the 1st or 2nd. It turns out that Charles Eldermire reported a Peregrine to eBird from Taughannock Falls SP on Jan 3, so that's the current record.Leaving City Hall, and knowing that Joe Wetmore is interested in birds, I stopped in Autumn Leaves used book store to let him know about the Peregrine. He had binoculars handy and came out to see. As we watched, at 3:52 it took flight overhead - an extra treat -going northeast. If I could find where it went I could post a follow-up. Standing in the City Hall parking lot I re-found it atop the brick chimney of a building on Seneca St opposite the Hilton, but I didn't know what to call that building. So I walked across the Commons to Seneca Street and saw a raptor atop the Tompkins Trust building. But the bird's back was brown, wrong for an adult Peregrine. And its face was brown, also wrong. It was an adult RED-TAILED HAWK, and the Peregrine was no longer on that building. I guess it had been displaced during the time I walked across the Commons. I didn't see the Peregrine again, and I didn't try very hard. There are too many nice perches in the area. I returned to my car, thinking about all the busy people in our 2-dimensional world at ground level, and all the things going on in the sky and atop the buildings, including 50 ROCK PIGEONS which continued throughout to fly over the neighborhood.--Dave NutterOn Jan 05, 2012, at 03:32 PM, 6072292...@vtext.com wrote: CayugaRBA PEREGRINE FALCON atop Holiday Inn, Ithaca --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html'http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ -- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --
[cayugabirds-l] Saw-whet Owl on Maple Ave
I just returned from a long walk on the eastern portion of the east Ithaca Recreation Way. As I reached my half-way point at Judd Falls Road I heard the four-note call of a Northern Saw-whet Owl repeated several times. I returned to my cay and drove back to Maple Ave, parking in the pull-off where the Rec Way joins Maple Ave (near the water tower). This was about 30 minutes later. I got out and played a series of toots on my penny whistle and the owl answered - once from about 50 feet away (from atop one of the horse enclosures), and then flew over, tooting four notes again. It was headed into the cemetery and did not respond any more.
