Sapsucker Woods, Sat 8/29
Along Sapsucker Woods Road on Saturday morning (~8:00 AM), I found a songbird flock that included MAGNOLIA, CHESTNUT-SIDED (2+), BLACKBURNIAN, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BLACK-AND-WHITE, NASHVILLE (2+), and WILSON'S WARBLER, plus a Red-eyed Vireo, and some chickadees, titmice, and woodpeckers. Before this encounter, I found very few birds along the Wilson Trail (most notably, one OVENBIRD singing and one VEERY calling in the woods). No Red-necked Phalaropes Ithaca NY
Doug Beattie and I went to Stewart Park and searched the green floating masses off the tennis courts then searched the shores to the west then to the east and saw a beautiful Blue Goose amongst some Canada Geese and many Mallards, No Phalaropes and not much else out there or near shore. As we progressed northward on the east side of the lake Doug spotted some Grebes by the Cornell U. marina. When we turned around the grebes were moving south towards the blue private home. We caught up with them close to shore near some Mallards and saw a Red-necked Grebe and a Horned Grebe close toegether. late afternoon/early evening. They seemed to be stationed halway between the marina and the blue private home along the very busy highway. Doug got out and jumped over the guard rail while I took a moment with the hazard lights to see the grebes.
