[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Lake 5Feb11, recent photos

2011-02-06 Thread Jay McGowan
Yesterday morning Scott Haber, Tim Lenz, Nick Sly, and I went around
Cayuga Lake. The weather was nice and the birding was decent, but we
didn't find too much of note. Highlights included a Nelson's-type
Herring Gull on the north spit at Myers Point (possibly the same bird
I photographed at the compost last week); 30 Tundra Swans and the
usual ducks species, also at Myers Point; a flock of over 100 Horned
Larks with at least a dozen Snow Buntings mixed in just south of the
Triangle in King Ferry; the EARED GREBE with seven Horned Grebes
straight out from the boathouse in Aurora; the Eastern Screech-Owl in
the box on Factory Street in Union Springs; and a KILLDEER on the lake
shore just south of the ice edge at Bonnie Banks Road on the west side
of the lake.

Additionally, here are a few photographs of birds I neglected to post
about from the past week or so.
A very dark (conceivably of the Pacific race) Merlin at the Triangle
in King Ferry on January 30th:

A partially leucistic American Crow with an awesome checkered pattern
on the Wells College Campus in Aurura, also on the 30th (this and the
following four photos):

A Red-shouldered Hawk at the bridge on Rt. 13 just east of Lower Creek
Road (possibly the same bird that lives at the Lab?) on the 29th:

The continuing Hermit Thrush at Monkey Run South on the 31st:
https://picasaweb.google.com/jmcgowan57/Winter20102011#5568449957191882962
And an interesting partially leucistic Common Redpoll that was part of
a flock of about 100 that descended on our feeders during the bad
weather on February 2nd:

[cayugabirds-l] gobbling

2011-02-06 Thread Geo Kloppel
I can't remember any mention of gobbling yet, but it's been going on
at my place every morning for about a week. I've also heard Ruffed
Grouse drumming.

No Redpolls at my feeders lately, but I do see them overhead
occasionally. About 30 went over this morning.

[cayugabirds-l] Song Sparrow and Redpolls

2011-02-06 Thread Annette Nadeau
I've had a SONG SPARROW coming to my feeder here on Boiceville Road
(Brooktondale) for the past week.

I also had one REDPOLL coming to the feeder until I put my thistle feeder back
out yesterday. Word spread among the Redpolls and I counted at least 29 in the
yard today.

[cayugabirds-l] NE Ithaca, Sun 2/6

2011-02-06 Thread Mark Chao
An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL exited the nest box in our yard in northeast Ithaca
at 5:48 PM on Sunday evening. The owl buzzed with rapid wingbeats straight
to a bare willow bough, then perched, completely exposed, for a couple of
minutes. This must have been my first decent look at the back and tail of
this species. Then the owl flew into a nearby pine tree and disappeared in
the shadows.

This owl has roosted in the yard every day since Wednesday, but before then,
I hadn't seen any owl for about three weeks.During this current string
of roosting days, the owl has been in view quite a lot (not only for us who
live here, but also for my mom, sister, and brother - life bird for him).
This ready visibility stands in contrast to our December string of
near-daily but momentary sightings only right at dawn.

My brother and I also saw some SNOW BUNTINGS and Horned Larks along Lake
Ridge Road in King Ferry on Saturday afternoon.
