[cayugabirds-l] MNWR - Sunday night
Apologies for the lateness of my report. Now 8 dowitchers at Puddler's Marsh, several with very long bills possibly outside the overlap zone but distance and poor lighting make it difficult to be sure of species. 125 Purple Martins near the spillway on the Wildlife Dr, while at the Visitor Center a brief visit by a flock of peeps seemed to contain only Least and Semi-p. Muddy scrapes next to the Thruway are starting to attract Killdeer and Lesser Yellowlegs. Didn't have time to check Knox-Marsellus. Dave W. [cayugabirds-l] NE Ithaca, Tues 8/2
On Tuesday evening at about 6:20 PM, I saw a MERLIN above the intersection of Simsbury and Winthrop Drives in suburban northeast Ithaca. I didn't have magnifying optics, but I got some long clinching views as the bird flew a couple of times right overhead. I plainly saw short pointed wings and a black tail with thin white bands. The bird's movements suggested that it was catching insects, but I didn't get sight confirmation of any prey. Re:[cayugabirds-l] Ithaca Great Egret
The Great Egret is roosting in the same place this evening, 2 August. --Dave Nutter Ithaca, NY On Aug 1, 2011, at 9:56 PM, Dave Nutter nutter.d...@mac.com wrote: On this evening's (1 Aug) canoe-paddle on Cayuga Inlet Laurie and I saw a Great Egret atop a small tree on the edge of Jetty Woods. A Great Blue Heron stood on a log below, and 17 Double-crested Cormorants rested on dead trees or soared nearby. A Belted Kingfisher and a couple of Caspian Tern families flew past. When we got home an Eastern Screech-Owl was calling from the edge of our yard. --Dave Nutter Ithaca, NY -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

These birds were calling repeatedly while slowly flying up and down the Cayuga Inlet. Good birding!
