[cayugabirds-l] Kestrels at SSW
I started out just before sunrise to find some SWAMP SPARROWS from the airport lights access road south of Rt13. But just as I reached the third parking lot for the Lab I stopped to check the high tension poles and wires and in addition to a group of EUROPEAN STARLINGS, I spotted first one AMERICAN KESTREL on the top of the pole West of Kipps Barn, then another on top of the first pole East of the third parking lot, so close enough for good looks. While watching, it dove off the pole and intercepted a passing blackbird (probably Red-winged) but missed. Both birds did an in-flight correction and the Kestrel took another pass, but either decided the prey was too big or was just lazy or not THAT hungry, so headed off and landed atop a nearby pine. I did find lots of non-trilling Swamp Sparrows, sometimes competing for a bush or small tree by flying at each other but then perching long enough for good identification. Meanwhile, at least one SONG SPARROW landed on the same tree as two of the Swamps and sang loudly in their general direction. Walking back, I had singing WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and one of the Kestrels sat facing the rising sun in one of the tall trees West of the Barn, showing its glowing breast. [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Wetland, 3/15
Hi All, I spent a few minutes this morning seeing what was at the preserve. Found at least 7 KILLDEER, first I've seen this year, and my personal highlight a WILSONS SNIPE. The snipe was in the open water area at the south end of Flat Iron Road. Lots of blackbirds, one Mallard, 21 Canada Geese and a few SONG SPARROWS were also present. Oh, and at home we had our FOY Song Sparrow. Good birding, David McCartt Tubbs Hill Rd. Re: [cayugabirds-l] More Woodcock
We enjoyed watching about 5 display flights of a Woodcock from the field in the southeast corner of Snyder Hill Rd and Whitted Rd. on Tuesday evening at dusk. MOCKINGBIRD on the road that goes from NY Rt. 34B down to the AES Power Plant and Millikin Station. [cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler
I just got a nice look at a very bright male PINE WARBLER singing in my yard on Yellow Barn Road, west of Dryden. I heard it sing once yesterday morning but wasn't willing to commit to the identification, not when juncos are doing all kinds of unformed trills these days. I was pretty sure of the ID, and am happy to have confirmed it with some good views this evening. Also yesterday a WINTER WREN was singing in the valley and my landlord had an EASTERN PHOEBE on his window today. Kevin J. I stuck a few photos of my Pine Warbler at http://picasaweb.google.com/KevinJ.McGowan/Spring2012Birds. On the downside, I had to close my screened door tonight because the mosquitoes were too bad. [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Thursday afternoon
I was in Aurora earlier today so I stopped at the boathouse to scan as it was pretty calm. There were 6 HORNED GREBES, three of them in breeding plumage and one C. LOON. I didn't see any sign of the EARED GREBE. I then drove to the Visitor's Center at Montezuma to see if anything new was around. The BLUE-WINGED TEAL were still there, new for me this year, but I was surprised to hear at least three MARSH WRENS singing by Larue's Lagoon and one E. TOWHEE. I didn't see any TREE SWALLOWS. I didn't see anything else that hasn't already been posted and the drive is still only open as far as the Carp bridge.
