Yesterday afternoon we birded the upper end of the lake and around Montezuma.
On our way home we checked the Mudlock Bald Eagles and saw an adult and a
juvenile sitting in a tree at the point. After a bit the adult took off and
gathered nesting materials which it carried to a tree just north
Shirley and I stopped by Marty Schlabach's place in Interlaken about noon
today in hopes of seeing the rufous hummer that has been there for a week.
We were not disappointed. The hummer made three appearances between 12:40
and 1:20. The rufous sides were clearly visible as the bird hovered
At 4:45 as I drove south along Tripphammer past the mall I noticed a medium
sized raptor perched on snags across from the car wash. I pulled into the car
wash and with my binoculars ID'ed it as a merlin (bluish-gray back, weak
mustache). When I switched from binoculars to camera it flew away.
