[cayugabirds-l] mockingbirds in winter
On Sunday there were 2 Northern Mockingbirds together in Staghorn Sumac and another small fruiting weed-tree I don't know by name along the edge of Cayuga Inlet in Cass Park. What surprised me was that there were 2 of them close together, and they seemed amicable during the moments I saw them. I've often found Northern Mockingbirds solo in fall winter inhabiting a thicket full of vines, bushes, and trees with fruit. I've seen them try to oust flocks of European Starlings eating their food supply, and I'm sure other birds provoke territorial defense as well, although mostly these quiet gray birds are pretty inconspicuous in winter. I've seen this mostly in Ithaca, where I spend most of my time, but also on the higher part of East Shore drive. I wonder if wintering Northern Mockingbirds around here are associated with low elevation and warmer microclimates, and I wonder if there are places with Northern Mockingbirds in summer where they are not found in winter.--Dave NutterOn Dec 25, 2012, at 01:10 AM, Tobias Dean tdea...@twcny.rr.com wrote:We had a mockingbird in our orchard on South Hill today. [cayugabirds-l] Mockingbirds
Mine are here year round. One in particular is always protective of the cedar/juniper berries is the guardian of the hill trying to drive away even large flocks of starlings. Last winter, for the 1st time, it was eating suet!! Other mockers live/stay in the thick stand of cedars a block away. We often see a mocker down along 90 at Levannah a couple other places along 90. Snow geese, noisily gabbing to each other, went to the lake by the thousands last evening just before dark. Wishing all our birding friends a very merry Christmas. RE: [cayugabirds-l] Mockingbirds
Hi, I always have a pair of Mockingbirds on my Christmas Bird Count. They live in a big scruffy field across from the condos on Bomax Road. Re: [cayugabirds-l] mockingbirds in winter
There are Mockingbirds on both Sweazey and Algerine Roads, near here, just above the lake shore. This is definitely a slightly warmer micro-climate here above the lake. Often when it is raining here, it is snowing a mile up the hill on Rt. 34B. [cayugabirds-l] redpolls
Our redpoll count just doubled from yesterday: we now have TWO. Ta Da! About 17 siskins on niger feeders. When they left, the resident goldfinches returned, about 18 of them. Hard to count 'em when they outnumber the perches on the feeders. The snow here (1 to2 inches) has made this a very birdy morning. We must have been very good this year, to be so rewarded. [cayugabirds-l] Hoary Redpoll and N. Goshawk
We had a large flock (over three dozen) Redpolls descend on the feeders today and one was a classic Hoary; they joined Red-breasted Nuthatches and a huge flock of goldfinch as well as two Pine Siskins. While doing our count here this morning we had a beautiful adult male Northern Goshawk as well as a Northern Mockingbird, cowbirds and red-wings among the more common species. [cayugabirds-l] Common Redpolls, Corning, NY
To Those Interested, Today was the first day I've seen Common Redpolls (CORE) at my feeders in East Corning! We had at least 5! I really can't remember the last time I had COREs at my feeders. Definitely pre-eBird! It has probably been since 1979 or 80! We've been having a lot of Pine Siskins (PISI) for at least a month now, usually 20-30 at a time. They are fun to watch. Having the COREs here today was a great Christmas present! Must be Bill and Shirley are the sharing type, in that we now have a red poll or two at our feeder as well, just up the road outside of Interlaken. Phil and Mary Jean saw two the other day, but today was the first day I saw one, a very nice Christmas present. [cayugabirds-l] Thousands of Snows
Sorry this report is late but we had family here for the afternoon evening so lots of chit-chat good food to eat, too. This was a very cloudy day but about 1:15 p.m. the sun suddenly came out the blue sky was almost clear of clouds for about 1/2 hr.. At 1:30 as I went out to the garage I was greeted by the unmistakable sound, right over my head, of the yipping of gabby SNOW GEESE ... with a few blues Canadas mixed in, wave after wave, N, E, S, W, heading to the lake. I watched for a bit expecting that would be the end. After I came out of the garage, here came more ... more more. What a fabulous sight, sunshine highlighing the black tipped wings on the pure white of the geese, against that magnificent blue sky!!! Shortly after the geese disappeared the dense clouds moved back across the sky. All those SNOW GEESE, nature's personal gift, came to make a Merry, Merry Christmas for me here in Union Springs!!! I hope you all had memorable joys today will continue to have more.
