I just got home after striking out on the Niemi Rd shrike. But I did manage my
FOY American Woodcock. It gave a few “peents” and then fell silent. South side
of Snyder Rd, 100 yds W of Mohawk Rd.

feeders. Total of about 20 birds about equally divided among Redwings,
Common Grackles, and Cowbirds. All appeared to be males. That was followed
closely by 2 Pine Siskins on the niger tube, the first here all winter.

Thanks, Ben. That is the most plausible explanation. The question then becomes,
at which altitude do the daytime winds that migrants (geese, raptors) depend on
occur? I would think the high altitude winds, given the lack of goose
migration today.

Just came down from the hill. Had to leave at Noon. Not much happening,

5 RAVENS gamboling, partnering up, then switching off. 2 BALD
Winds began the day light west to northwest at the surface and have shifted to
south this afternoon but they are pretty light. At a few thousand feet up winds
are more west to southwest. At 5000 feet and above the winds today are more
west to northwest. So it doesn't look like a big strong
Based on the weather forecast for south winds today I have been sitting on our
south facing deck doing a Skywatch since about 1030 this morning. Contrary to
the weather reports however, the high clouds above us are clearly coming out of
the West by Northwest. I find it very puzzling. There have
I noticed the same thing — thanks for saving me from another cold and bird less

John Confer and I spent the morning in the Montezuma area helping with the
spring waterfowl count. We checked with the other counters at noon and found
that there was nothing new for the Basin to report (no more Shovelers, no
Blue-winged Teal, no Ospreys).
As we got out of the car at the DEC
Since around 3 pm the goose flocks have been constant. Canada's and Snow Geese,
often in mixed flocks. Still coming now. :)
