[cayugabirds-l] Feather Atlas

2015-11-22 Thread bob mcguire
I may be the last one to find out about this - but if not . . . . .

Brought to my attention by Bill Hecht: the US FWS “Feather Atlas: Flight
Feathers of North American Birds”. An amazing resource for identifying birds
from a single feather (wing or tail).

2015-11-22 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Thanks Bob! Just right in time this email came.

I was sitting with a few feathers in my coat pocket, which I collected them
from Arboretum a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was from Ring-necked
Pheasant, something had killed this bird and eaten most of it except for a
bunch of feathers lying on the ground. But I wanted to confirm it.

Now with the feather ID page I did confirm it as Ring-necked Pheasant. Must
have been killed by a fox or some larger bird like Great horned Owl.

 Nice collection of feather photos!

Ahoy birders,

my newsfeed for lake ontario reports botulism deaths among waterfowl Wayne
to Jefferson Counties starting about mid October to present. I would be
curious to hear of any observations you collectively have of Cayuga Co
shoreline.
I have NOT seen any dead birds this fall on my 1500 foot stretch of Wayne
Co shoreline but I may have missed em-

[cayugabirds-l] The Messenger Movie

2015-11-22 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies! I thought I should let you know the results. I got
reply from about 30 people that they are interested in screening the movie in
Ithaca, some via Doodle and some directly to me and preferred time period was
April. I am glad to know so many of you are interested in the movie.

But there is a slight twist, it seems Linda Orkin had started already some
negotiation with the officers of the CBC and she thought I was jumping her guns
and I had no clue about it. Only my goal was I wanted to see the movie and as
it was not being shown anywhere near Ithaca, I decided to check with the
distributors and based on their communication I thought it would be nice to
bring the movie here if there is enough interest.

So currently, I am not sure if the CBC wants to have it as a CBC event or not.

But anyway, we should get this movie here in Ithaca during early spring.

Thank you for your interest, I will let you know in due course what is
happening.

As for birding today, I spent most of my time in my house and spent 10 minutes
out in the yard trying to photograph the NFC mic on my roof for an article,
that is when I heard two Downies drumming on one of my dead trees and were
playing a game of peek a boo. Actually, I think one was chasing away the other
female from her territory as they have no time for fun games I think.

Cheers

Meena
