I have seen this behavior, too. I think it is advertising possession of a nest
cavity ready to share.

I spent last night at Marten’s Tract in order to record the various ducks
feeding/courting there. A major bonus of being there in the evening, then at
first light this morning, was the encounter with several recently-returned
birds.
An AMERICAN BITTERN called several times from the reeds along
Yesterday, Sunday, late afternoon at Myers- Salt Point, an Osprey sat for a
while on each of the two nest boxes. The bird had a completely unmarked
breast- male? It took off heading north last I saw.
Several Song Sparrows back on territory there, and a flock of at least 100 Tree
Swallows
Meg reported that the Dutcher road Kestrels are back at the nest box.

Yesterday I saw a red bellied woodpecker on a tree right across from
llenroc on Cornell Ave, very close to the curb on the cemetery side of the
road perched above what looked like it might be a nest hole. It was
kwirring quite a bit.

I just went to see the nest mentioned yesterday at the Stewart Ave Bridge right
before Fall Creek Drive. Great looks and since the hawk was briefly off the
very visible nest I spotted 2 eggs

Hi Matt,
Yes, I think that is very likely, and I probably mis-id'ed this bird. I did
not note the bold markings typical of the female R-b Grosbeak. In my haste
to pin it down I eliminated the House FInch and completely lapsed on the
Purple Finch.
