Hi Bard, I tried to determine which species mine were. They had strings of 4 - 5 equal-sized submarginal black spots with blue centers both topside and underside of the hindwings, so I called them painted ladies (Vanessa cardui) rather than American ladies (Vanessa virginiensis). I was

Both Cayuglists are noting the painted lady explosion. And interestingly, if you type "painted lady butterfly" into a search engine right now, you will find that there are “wow—all the painted ladies” reports from Minnesota, Jamestown, and many more places. What kind of synchrony is this?
