[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill cranes (Seneca Lake)

2018-03-20 Thread Gian Dodici
I was lucky enough to have two sandhill cranes fly over (low and calling)
me this morning at the east end of Fairground Lane, Watkins Glen. They
were flying over the cattails on the west side of Catharine Creek.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Missing falconry Red-tailed Hawk

2018-03-20 Thread khmo
Make That Anna Maria. It is a young RT in molt (missing some retrices
and others ) which escaped its enclosure. May have returned to point of
capture near the Pheasant Farm. Young apprentice falconer is daughter of
a friend and obviously very upset. She would be appreciative of any
leads. Jesses were "hunting" jesses so bird may be able to more easily
doff them.

[cayugabirds-l] fox sparrow

2018-03-20 Thread Bill Mcaneny
About noon today, a FOX SPARROW was scavenging seeds beneath a feeder near
our creek. This is a yard FOY for us.

Today's count of goldfinches is 23. In last week's storm, we had 50.

Hi all,

The Lab of O received a call today about a falconry bird that has gone
missing. It's a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk with one jess and bells on both

[cayugabirds-l] Newman Golf Course area, Mon 3/19 and Tues 3/20

2018-03-20 Thread Mark Chao
On three visits since Sunday, I’ve come various interesting birds at the
Newman Municipal Golf Course and Jetty Woods in Ithaca. Here are some
highlights.

* GREAT HORNED OWL on an open nest atop a tree in the middle of the golf
course. This is the very same location where two Great Horned Owls fledged
in 2015. Twice, most recently on Sunday evening, I’ve seen a second adult
Great Horned Owl for a long time out in the open in a nearby tree, but on
Monday and Tuesday mornings, I couldn’t refind him. The mother seems to be
sitting higher on the nest this week than last. I conjecture hopefully
that this means the eggs have hatched and the chicks are growing. (Many
birders have reported this owl nest on eBird since the beginning of March
or earlier.)

* Second-year BALD EAGLE flying from Fall Creek past the white lighthouse
and alighting in a tree on the Cass Park side (Tuesday).

* Female YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER along the dirty-looking drainage pool along
Pier Road near the fire training buildings (Monday and Tuesday).

* WINTER WREN seen singing a partial song in this same area (Monday).

* Multiple male PURPLE FINCHES, including one singing a distinctive,
vaguely vireo-like song with short phrases and pauses (Monday and Tuesday).

* At least three pairs of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS (Monday and Tuesday)

* Four GREAT BLUE HERONS perched about at least 50-60 feet up in
neighboring trees in the Jetty Woods, with bills tucked for heat retention,
plus one standing in Fall Creek (Tuesday).

* At least ten WOOD DUCKS, including a flock of 8 males that wheeled above
Pier Road and descended somewhere upstream on the creek (Tuesday).

Full eBird checklists are here:

[cayugabirds-l] Short Eared Owls

2018-03-20 Thread Donna Lee Scott
At Long Point winery above East side Cayuga Lake yesterday evening. Friend Bill
& I saw one close by in field off Lg Pt Rd bouncing around in tall grass -
taking short flights over grass then landing again, several times. It stood
tall in grass looking around giving good binoc views of its face.

Then after sunset when owl flew away, down towards grape arbor, & out of sight,
I pulled car off Rt 90 just below winery & the other brew house & was
delighted to see 2 S E Owls sitting in 2 different small deciduous trees,
silhouetted in the orangey fading sunset!

That big field is where Sarah Blodgett saw one flying right over her Sunday
evening.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese Monday over Union Springs

2018-03-20 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard

About 12:30 p.m. today (19th) on our way to MNWR, (vistor's center was open)
daughter, Becky Sewell, & I saw tens of thousands of Snows

mid-lake out from Canoga Shores (N. of Canoga) & opposite the Kozy Cove
area north of Union Springs. There were several tremendously HUGE rafts
spread over a long & wide distance.

I live 1/2 mi. east of the lake.  About 5 p.m. I was working outside for
a couple hrs.. Suddenly, overhead, gossiping, arguing, noisy snow geese
began to come by the hundreds from NW, heading SE right over my head &
spread also to the north & south of me.  It took at least 1/2 hr. for
the massive numbers to end. It's an amazing sight to see.

We saw the eagles at Mud Lock. Female is incubating & male was on watch.
We also had a low flying juvenile bald eagle just north of Cayuga. The
Eurasian wigeon was still at the Visitor's Center along with the
Snow/Canada cross goose. A Northern harrier was hunting over the marsh.
